Film Production Offer

I am an international student and have received offers from Salford, Nottingham Trent, Northumbria and Portsmouth. Can anyone advise me on which program is better? Thanks.

None of these are CILECT member film schools. Can you explain what convinced you to apply to these choices?

Hello @Julian_lks,

Firstly I want to say congratulations on your offer letter for our institution, we are all very excited for you.

Our film production course has a lot to offer. We are a vocational institution, which is a really fancy term for saying that we are practical in the way we teach things. If you have a passion for camerawork, scriptwriting, audio production, or have a desire to make your film concepts a reality through team work on a production set, then we can offer all of that to you.

You will make and edit short films using high-end camera and editing at our state-of-the-art campus situated in the heart of MediaCity, the country’s biggest creative media cluster.

You can find out so much more about our course on the course page of our website here.

If you have any specific questions about the course, do feel free to ask them and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

I hope this helps,
Matt ~ University of Salford Rep

Hi Julian,

Congratulations on all of your offers, you've done such a fantastic job!

I'm not going to spiel about what Portsmouth or the course has to offer, as you probably already know it from researching us on our website. But I will share 3 of my favourite things about the creative courses in general.

I think the thing I find coolest is that Eldon which is the home of the film production course, is where all creative courses are taught. So, if you want to dip your fingers in other creative/artistic elements, like typography or screen printing (to name a few) then you can try them out. Your access to our equipment isn't just limited to your course. I know typography sounds kind of boring but the old-school equipment (which is still used in industry today) is so cool, and maybe it can be incorporated into your films!

We also have an amazing VR lab and the best part is that we aren't precious or protective of it. Students get to use this equipment for different reasons, for example, our fashion students make digital content with it for their clothing designs. By having access to and using this equipment you'll get some amazing first-hand experience to add to your CV, which will make you stand out from other students. The other day Tim Peake was here testing it out!

I've seen some amazing work by our film students, which is all shown at our end-of-year Graduate Showcase. This is one of our biggest events at the University, and students and staff from all other departments come to appreciate the amazing work our creative students do. Potential employers also come to the show, to talk to our students about career prospects with them.

Whichever university you choose, I hope you enjoy your time there. At the end of the day, that's what's most important. You want to pick a University AND a location you feel at home in to thrive.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I’m curious as to why you feel that the only courses worth considering are CILECT accredited? I was under the impression that ScreenSkills is a very respected body within the UK film industry, and their accredited courses are carefully assessed to ensure that the students are industry ready. May I ask what your connection is with the industry? Are you a current student or a graduate? Or do you teach film? I’m in the process of applying for film production courses starting Sep 25 and have visited uni’s that are accredited by both CILECT and ScreenSkills, it is an important decision and I would be interested what your experience/opinion is based on?

screenskills used to be a really useful and rigorous list of courses until about 5-6 years ago when they increased their prices for accreditation and dropped lots of the requirements. They started lowering the prices again but haven't increased the requirements so listing on screenskills isn't necessarily a sign of quality.

There's no single measure of a good film school (because even the best film school is no good if you're miserable or have no money) but CILECT is international recognition and they're pretty picky about letting in new members so it's a reasonable starting point for the most established and internationally recognised film schools in the UK at least for undergrad.

There's also IMIS (but then they say about themselves "IMIS offer a very affordable and user friendly complementary scheme to be available alongside any existing other schemes that are on offer." so they tend to be slightly shabbier resource wise) and Arri (https://www.arri.com/en/learn-help/arri-academy/arri-certified-film-school-program ) if you want a film school with more current kit - but then just because they HAVE Arri kit doesn't mean every student gets to USE Arri kit....
