The Student Room Group

Is this fair?

I live with two other people in a house. One of them vapes in the house and I can smell the smoke everywhere I go in the house and the other smokes pot outside but I always smell it in the corridor and where my room is. They use to smoke it in their room, but I think they stopped for now.

Smelling it is having an impact on my health. I'm feeling very very anxious all the time and I find it difficult to stay calm. I've never smoked or used pot in my life because I want to lead a healthy life style.

I can't afford to live anywhere else and I've told them many times to stop but they won't listen to me. they just don't care the impact the smell of drugs and the vape smell is having on me.

I don't feel happy at all.

I'm worried in years to come I'm going to develop serious breathing problems because of them, I have asthma too.

That's awful, I would hate it too if people in my house smoked pot and vaped and I don't even have asthma

What is it about your circumstances that means you cannot afford to live anywhere else?

Are you locked into a contract or in accommodation where it is very difficult to find a replacement tenant? Is it an ultra cheap property?

I would be looking to up my budget, even if it required me to work extra hours or cut back on other expenses, if it meant living in a better place.

Your selfish flatmates aren't going to change as their behaviour isn't impacting them and smoking gives them more pleasure than your happiness.

Grow up I grew up in a bad neighbourhood and smelt it everyday smelling it will not affect u at all and its unfair to tell someone to stop something that they use to stress relive when it cannot affect u if u do not smoke it

What does the contract say? Have you reported it formally?

It's not fair that your housemates' habits are affecting your health and well-being. Since you've already talked to them without success, you might consider these steps:
1. **Communicate Clearly:** Have a calm, serious conversation about your health concerns, emphasizing how their smoking and vaping are impacting you.
2. **House Rules:** Propose setting clear house rules about smoking and vaping only in certain areas or outside.
3. **Air Purifiers:** Invest in air purifiers for your room to reduce smoke and vape particles.
4. **Seek Mediation:** Consider involving a neutral third party, like a landlord or mediator, to help resolve the issue.
5. **Document Everything:** Keep a record of your conversations and any health impacts for future reference.
Finding a long-term solution is important for your health and well-being.
