carers allowance

My son recently received his award which was higher than expected (I know we shouldn't complain) but I think it's incorrect. I've called SFE and they say it's correct based on our household income - his award only takes into account my husband's income and not mine - I'm in receipt of carer's allowance. It appears that HMRC have not submitted an income for me.

I'm not sure whether to dispute the amount (as I would hate for it to be clawed back next year and leave him short) or accept that carer's allowance doesn't form part of our household income?

Hi there,

Can you please tell us when you started receiving Carer's Allowance?

Thanks, Graeme

Thanks, Carer's Allowance is taxable so we do take this into account.

However, this should have been done for you automatically when we checked your income with HMRC.

Just to check, is there something that makes you think we've got your income as £0?

Thanks, Graeme

Yes. I rang yesterday and asked the operator to confirm our household income and the figure quoted was the same as my husband's pension. He wasn't able to break the detail down though to say what HMRC have submitted for me, so can only assume my income hasn't been included.

Okay, that's no problem - can you try sending us a live chat on your account during the week? https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login

We can then check to see that we have this income for you.

Thanks, Graeme

Starting to get somewhere after another phone call to SFE today. Still not able to establish why he's been awarded over the maximum amount for his circumstance but I've completed a PFF2 form in the hope that his application will be looked at again and hopefully my income included this time. I've uploaded 1 form with both mine and my husband's details on but my son hasn't had any acknowledgement...is this normal?

Hi there,

You son's application will be reassessed once the form has been processed. He will then be notified of the outcome. It is normal that he has not received any notification of the new uploaded form.

Thanks, Angela
