Do you have photo ID ready for the election?

Hi everyone :hello: as we all know there is a general election upcoming.

As young people we need to have our photo ID ready, older people are able to use things like travel cards but unfortunately this is not the case for us so we need to get prepared.

Having to take photo ID to the polls is something that is relatively new and according to the electoral commission young people are the least likely to be aware of this change. It's important that we are all aware of this change so that as many of our generation can cast their vote if they want to and have our voices heard.

The NUS have a handy article on acceptable forms of ID, you are able to use out of date ID providing the picture still looks like you. Find out more here: https://www.nus.org.uk/photo-id

The most common forms of photo ID are drivers licenses (either provisional or full) and passports. However if you don't have any form of photo ID the NUS have teamed up with Citizens card to offer anyone who needs it a valid form of photo ID that you can use at the polls*. The deadline to apply for this is the 20th June so it's important to act quickly if you want to take advantage of this: https://www.nus.org.uk/citizencard (please note this is a link to an external petition).

If you are heading to the polls in July what form of ID will you be taking? Do you agree with needing photo ID?

I have photo ID - I will be using my provisional driving licence but I do not agree with having to use photo ID because it is just a means of excluding people from voting to increase the percentage of votes for the Conservatives (which ironically backfired). These people have the right to vote, but are being excluded because the Conservatives think they will vote against them, so try and put as much difficulty into letting them vote while not banning them from voting.
I personally fully agree with using photo ID however the UK needs to have a system where all citizens have (or at least should have) a standardised citizenship card similar to what countries like France and Spain have:

Until the UK implements a similar system, I don’t think that requiring everyone to have photo ID is 100% the way forward and as flowersinmyhair says, it can be seen as exclusionary.
