what does it mean if someone doesn't follow you back?

Today I requested to follow 2 of my friends on Instagram, they accepted my request but didn't follow me back. These girls aren't people I hang out with, more like close class friends. Also it has been hours since they accepted me.

I am so confused because these girls have made it clear that they like me, and I am able to tell 100% of the time when people don't like me. Also whenever I request to follow someone on Instagram ,even if we aren't friends, they accept and follow me back.

This probably sounds like a very trivial problem, but I think this can be very telling about whether people like you or not. This has honestly upset me a bit because I really thought these girls liked me/ we were friends. What could this mean?

The only thing i can see is that they don't wanna follow you back full stop. They may be the kinda people to gain loads of followers but they only follow their day ones or the closest of the closest. But then again its just instagram and its just followers. It really isnt that deep. If they still lke you irl and talk to you then instagram followers should really be a problem. Them follwoing you is not a way of showing they like you, they can show that by being friends and talking to you.

Having someone follow you back isn't an indicator of whether they are a friend. A person can easily talk behind you're back whilst following you and liking pics etc. So drop this mindset because it will only make you upset.
Maybe post a picture and ask them what they thought of it - so then they have a chance of following you back(if ur account is on private).
But yeah it's not deep at all
