Cs in Year 12 end of years, what about the real thing?

I got Cs and a B in my year 12 end of years. I know I’m capable of so much more because I’ve had a bumpy year with family stuff, mental health etc. I was only a few marks off Bs in the C grades and I really really want to get good grades. Currently I’m trying my best for the remaining tests we have this year and in the start of year13 to get the best possible predictions, but I doubt il get more than AAB/ABB.
I really want A*s or As in the real exams and am willing to work hard for it but lately I’ve been feeling demotivated as I keep seeing stuff like if you got Cs then it’s unlikely to get higher than a B at most etc. anyone been through this or got some motivational tips? I’m trying my best but could really do with some tips and maybe an inspirational story or smth lmaoo
Hi mate. Hope you are well, I do computer science currently so I am sitting my exams atm. I did not do computer science at GCSE so in year 12 it was pretty difficult for me especially at the very start, I got 5 Cs and 3 Bs in my first year (got one A too coz I cooked on one test) and we also struggled since we did not actually have a teacher so only had substitutes so basically craig and dave carried my whole first year revision. It is definitely possible to put yourself in a great position for As and A*s from where you are at currently. What exam board do you do? I do OCR so we have coursework which I absolutely grinded out and ended up with full marks on so fingers crossed I can do well enough on my exams to get a solid grade. One thing I will say is do not underestimate what revision you can do over summer, even if it is just an hour a day or something small that will be more than the majority of other people so will put you in a great position for good predicteds and good grades in the end. Also, the majority of teachers do not want to hold you back because of predicted grades so if there is a specific uni you wanna go to which needs a higher predicted speak to them and just ask - I did that and because in my second year I consistently got As and my coursework was perfect he bumped me up to an A* predicted from a B ( don't get me wrong I feel A* is a longshot). Just means you will have to put that extra bit of effort in. Good luck with everything mate and if you have any questions I will be happy to answer.

when people say things like if you get Cs you won't be able to get As in the real thing it's a very simplistic statement and honestly not that true - i got Ds in my y12 mocks and am currently sitting a levels on track for AAA

external circumstances such as your family stuff and mental health very much does impact both the amount of revision you are mentally capable of without burning out and how well you focus in the real thing, so do factor that in especially if circumstances are likely to change for the better during your actual a-levels

also, a levels are much more spaced out than mocks - during my last set of mocks i sat 8 exams in a period of 9 school days, whereas my actual a levels are 9 exams spread out across a month. this means revision is less intense and easier to manage, you can prioritise in ways that you can't for mocks because of all this time (especially with the half term!)

if you didn't put much work into your revision for mocks, but in the real thing you will put in the effort - you are obviously capable of performing better, as you will have actually revised.

for me, i had a seriously bumpy time at the end of y12 and was going through one of the worst periods of my life in terms of my mental health, so i had no motivation to revise. across my exams, my grades ranged from a low B to a middle D i think, but i was generously predicted AAB because my school was aware of how much i was struggling. now that i'm sitting my exams, i know i've put in 1000x more work in than i did for y12 and i've felt the improvement - i'm confident i could achieve AAA in my exams but even if i don't, i know i've done better than i did in y12, BBB at worst. fingers crossed i can be that inspirational story!!! lol

Thank you so much for your reply! I hope you’re doing better and congrats on getting your grades up!! I will definitely consider everything you mentioned and fingers crossed circumstances are getting better and will keep doing so, so hopefully I can focus more now.
Definitely an inspirational story haha thanks and best of luck with your exams )

Hey, thanks so much for the reply and advice. Unfortunately my school is pretty grade obsessed and refuse to muck up their stats by predicting anybody too high, but can’t hurt to ask my teacher especially given most of em are new and not as strict in their ways lol
I’m definitely gonna grind over the summer and do my best and even a bit now in this half term
I don’t have coursework or anything but my teachers literally spend like 20 mins on a topic and then just expect independent work so lessons basically do nth

Again thanks for the advice - I defo feel much better now 🙂
