Estranged student- UCAS application Would I count?

Hiya I was wondering if I would count as an estranged student/ going through the process of estrangement. My parents have been quite abusive in terms of verbal, emotional and physical abuse towards me from a very young age. It's come to the point where I eventually told my school about it and social services recently got involved (within the last 2 months). I'm planning on applying to university this year for entry in September 2025 but I'm not too sure if I would count as technically being "estranged"? My plan was to get to university, hopefully as far as I can get away from home, and just cut my parents off because it's come to the point where I feel extremely unhappy at home and have almost run away a few times too.

With that being said, how would student finance work when I apply for it? Because technically if I'm still in contact with my parents until I go to university then my maintenance loan would be significantly lower right?

If you are still living at home when you apply, and when you go to Uni, you are not 'estranged'.

Ahh okay that's fair enough. Because my situation would most likely change once I start university (where I am no longer in contact with my parents as the relationship is currently in the process of becoming irreconcilable) do you know how that would work in terms of student finance/ accommodation?

Here it says „Or is this likely to be your situation before you start uni?“, so I do think that your situation would be considered under estranged as ofc it refers to very complex situations, which may be very different from one another. If ur worried I would recommend giving ucas a ring! But as estranged student mainly refers to the financial/emotional support you might require as a student, it’s definitely good to let ur uni know about this so they can support you. I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through and I hope things get better for you when you move out to uni!

For SFE, the period of estrangement is usually at least 12 months before you can be considered irreconcilably estranged from your parents:

If you want to ask an SFE rep for advice about funding for subsequent years, make a post in the Ask SFE forum:

Hi there 👋,

I am sorry to hear you have been through this.

From personal experience, I would recommend asking your Head of Year at the school you attend as they will know more. However, as a general answer, if you have the relevant paperwork to suggest you have not been in contact with your family for a certain amount of time then it counts. Normally, you will have to have moved out and not of been in contact with them at all, suggesting they have no relevant links to supporting you in any area of your life.

Hope this helps.

They are still living at home - they are not estranged at all.
