art/design work experience

hey everyone! I'm a year 11 student (and about to finish my gcses), and I'm looking for work experience for the summer. I think id like to do something design related, since I think I want to do art/design in uni in the future. I know it can be a bit hard to find work experience related to creatives, so can anyone help me out?

Is there any small roles you can do within your community?
Art/design work can be easily found online or personally started as a business by yourself (e.g commission work)

I would say the easiest way for art/design work is online as there's a large art community up there.

if you go on museum/ local art gallery websites a lot run activities and camps which are art + craft focused during the summer for younger children, and you can ask to volunteer at those

some art galleries do also run art/creative clubs or courses during the summer for teens - wouldnt be work experience as such but you could get the ‘arts award’

you could also try contacting those art galleries to see if they can just offer you even a weeks work experience to shadow some exhibition curators ect

also you could contact freelance artists (be careful w this one) or if you have any friends/family members who are artists and ask to shadow them for a few days as this counts as work experience

virtual work experience will also be quite helpful. check springpod - or you could find a MOOC in art/design - unifrog is great for finding these

Hi @Yamato tree

It's great that you are starting to look for work experience in you field, this will be very useful in the future!

Depending on where you live a gallery or a museum may be a great place to work and build your art knowledge.

Often crafty places like pottery shops or pottery painting cafes look for staff over the summer.

You could potentially look to intern somewhere maybe contact a few companies or local artist and search online for internship positions.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience and you can usually apply with little experience. Plus lots of charities are looking for volunteers. Or maybe helping out a children's art clubs or adult art classes.

Maybe even something in events, like creating signage, displays or shop window art.

Even just general part-time work in hospitality and retail are great for building skills that you will use in any future role you have.

I hope these ideas help, they might be a bit random but hopefully a good place to start looking. Good luck in finding something and feel free to let me know how you get on, I may be able to help with more ideas
