Medicine 3rd Year student missed pass on main exam by 1.4%

Hello,

Asking for someone near and dear.

She studied like hell but missed the pass mark by 1.4%. Now she's sat in her car crying. In her defence, there were a lot of distractions at home, including dad's declining health. She's worried about failing resit in August and having to repeat the year. What are the chances uni will make an exception? It is just 1.4% less.

Can anyone advice?

Thank you

Did she make the uni aware of her father's ill health?

No. Dad actually was in and out of the A&E for a few days a week after exam. But uni was not made aware. She did not put any extenuating circumstances request or anything. She has an appointment with her supervisor tomorrow and I have told her to discuss the situation in detail (take A&E results).

It wuld have been better if she had. Has she seen Student upport or the student union?

Unfortunately, I have never known a med school allow someone to progress who has not met the required standards, even by 0.1%.
They also generally do not drop requirements wrt ExCircs - the mantra is that if you present yourself for an exam, you are saying you are fit to sit it. Retrospective ExCircs also tend not to be a thing - they say you need to be aware of your own fitness to practice and not put anyone in a position where they may be at risk due to sub-standard performance (which is a bit of a joke, as the NHS will flog an almost dead horse if it fills a rota gap!).
But like you say, she is not far off, so with concerted efforts until August, taking note of where she struggled, she should be fine.
Good luck!
