English Language Paper 2 Question 2

Hello, I am in Year 10 and have an English Language Paper 2 mock coming up in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I was never in school whilst learning about how to answer Question 2 on the paper and need some help. I’ve been set homework as revision and require to answer a practise paper 2 question 2 question and I am confused as to whether or not I’ve done it right. Here is my response:

Both Source A and Source B describe the strange things in very different ways: Source A talks about a Ghost Hunters experiences, and overall attempts to debunk myths about phantoms, whereas Source B is describing a ‘trustworthy account’ of a spirit being witnessed.

In Source A, the strange thing was the “ghostly piano music in the middle of the night”. The music being described as ‘ghostly’ suggests the house occupants believed it was coming from something supernatural. However, the ghost hunter then being proved right that the source of the music was non-occult could imply that people are often too quick to determine whether something is paranormal or not. This is emphasised when the ghost hunter states that "98% of the hundreds of ghost investigations.. have proved to have non-occult explanations” which shows the mass of people who are misinfluenced by ghosts.

In contrast, Source B recites a strange witness of a “spirit rise” which “did not step on the ground but immediately went up over the staircase and disappeared”. This differs from Source A because a spirit has actually been witnessed, other than an alleged ‘ghost’ being heard play music. The spirit immediately disappearing from the woman’s vision could suggest it was never there at all and could have just been a hallucination. However, when the child was pronounced dead by the mother, this could be implying that it was not a hallucination and the woman really did see a spirit rise.

The sources for this answer can be found here: https://crestacademy.e-act.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/03/Covid-19-Language-Paper-2.pdf

Can someone please just let me know whether I’m answering correctly and give it a mark out of 8, perhaps some tips on how to improve? Thank you!

Hey, looks like you've really well! I'm sadly not confident enough to be able to give people firm marks but I definitely think this would be hitting the top bands. The key thing my teacher always says is that you need to make inferences based on the information you're given to get the top marks. As long as you know that, you're pretty much set.

I'm not sure how much research you've done into the question but if you want to solidify your competence in this question, I'd highly recommend watching some YouTubers. Personally, my favourite is Mr Salles and he's got a video on it here:
