if 90% of students at my school never get detention does the fear punishment work ?

My school harsh a no nonsense approuch to disipline and punishment, we have after school detentions on tuesday and friday evenings, each last for 1hour 45 minutes and are VERY VERY boring we have to sit in total silence and write an essay on why we are being punished, for more serious offencies saturday detention, which lasts for 4 hours, my school recently done a survey and it concluded that only 10 % of students have ever been in detention and only 3 % had ever got a satuday detention, does this mean these harsh detentions work as a deterrent ?

yes because the statistics are very low, if those weren't harsh punishments then everyone would be getting a detention. but daaamnn grl 1 hr and 45 min as well as saturday detention???? that is maad. my school only does 45 min detention after school once a week.

the 1 hour 45 minute detention is for general bad behavour, not doing your homework or being late 3 times in a term, to get a 4 hour saturday detention, you have to get 3 detentions in a term, skip a normal detention, skip lessons etc, i had a saturday detention last year , it was HORRIBLE, we had to be at school at 845am, we had to wear FULL school uniform white shirt , tie, black skirt and black blazer, we had to have our collars done up and our ties neat and tidy, we then had to sit at our desks in TOTAL silence and write a 4 page essay on why we were being punished, after 2 hours we were given a 15 minute break, then another 2 hours of essay writing, after this we had to tidy the classroom then we were free to go home, my mum picked me up from school and took me shopping, in FULL school uniform, she said this was my punishment for getting saturday detention, i didnt get out of my school uniform until 6pm i think this is cruel dont you ?
