Othello A-level critics

I'm also struggling to find critics to use in my work. And embedding them in my work is also proving to be difficult.

I’ve just seen your other post and replied! For critics I would try getting a decent range that link to characters as well as themes? I focused on getting critic quotes that linked to themes as it was easier to then link to character afterwards.
Using them in answers can depend on the way you write but my teacher had said you can use critics as really analyse them or you can use them as ‘micro-critics’ by just mentioning them to help strengthen a point you’ve made and not really do any analysis - I would try doing both of these though. The trick is to just treat it like a line from the text, but make sure you write down the critics name and try reference the audience as remember - the critic was also apart of the audience at one point! 🙂 so you could argue for the audience feeling this way towards a scene or another, and use one or even 2 critics to argue your point or go against it!

As for actual critics and quotes; I always looked at quizlet and other people’s essay plans as they were the easiest to find and they usually also had some minor annotations which were helpful. here are some that I used which may help if you can’t find any!

Race:
“Othello was always an outsider” - mangam
“Othello was a test of racial persecution” - Bristol
“Women and blacks exist as ‘the other’” - Loomba

Women:
“Possession of a woman’s handkerchief was considered adultery” - Newman
“She dies in the service of truth” (Emilia) - Simpson
(Women and blacks exist as ‘the other’ could also link here!)

Jealousy:
“It is othello’s jealousy, not Iago’s hatred, that is the real tragedy” - Greer
[iago] is the very voice of jealousy itself” - Godfrey

Iago and his motive:
“Many have come close to sympathising with him” - honnigman
“Enjoys a God-like sense of power” - Honnigman
“Motiveless malignity” - Coleridge
“Iago, who is nothing if not a racist” - hollindale (which ofc links to race too)

Here’s only a few but I would definitely recommend looking on Quizlet for others and target ones you don’t think cover a certain area - so for example love or religion etc.
