do i have dyslexia? and need advice.

i have been suffering some symptoms
but i dont knw if i do or its just a learning disability
here are symptoms
sorry cauze they are a bit long
-miss out words or lose my place when reading

- i mix up similar words

- i sometime confuse my lefts and rights

- its hard to follow several instruction cauze i either forget when i go to do it or my brain doesnt regester it.

So i say i will do it later but then i dont cauze i forget it straight away, usually with chores.

When i read i have to read something multiple times to understand it but when reading novels i can becauze i grasp the general idea of the book.

Also i pick up the phone for my parents frequently i struggle to take brief message stating the purpose of the call or even in convos

I have difficulties saying the right word or i knw what i want to say but i cann’t say it or don’t knw hw.

I try to find like creative solutions eg in chores i do them straight away or i keep saying them until i do them. Becauze even when i go to the chores like oh X(me) go and bring me my phone from upstairs. I go upstairs and then i forget wat i was supposed to do.

I find it difficult to put ideas on paper or even writing. Especially in english like oh X write and essay for me on dogs and i would knw the the stuff in my head but i cant write it down.

I cant even read out loud like i feel all the words are mixed up or i miss or read the words wrong.

and thats it any help would be appreciated

hey, i have been diagnosed with dyslexia since i was 14 i think, I always knew, the things your describing a very similiar to how i felt.

I would recommend speaking to someone at your school or your parents as the support you can have will help you at school, i get extra time, a laptop and blue paper to help with my dsylexia.

Maybe have a chat with teachers at school to see if they feel the same and then work from there

Some of your symptoms sound like dyspraxia to me but that’s because I have it and they are quite similar, definitely have a chat with your teachers at school and any professionals if you can

Hi,

Getting a diagnosis is a step toward understanding your condition(s). Your school, college, or university can help with this. Often, there is funding to support getting a professional diagnosis, and once you have this, setting up a Learning Support Plan is much easier, along with further support such as IT equipment, software, and learning techniques.

You may also find the built-in features of word-processing software helpful. They will have a review menu, and MS Word, for example, can read the document out aloud.

Have a chat with your institution's disability team/officer. 🙂

Yeah, you should get a diagnosis.
I have mild dyslexia and some of the symptoms fit perfectly. I was diagnosed very late because I had a good memory and was a good student so no one really noticed things take me more time to do when I was among the first students in every test and had a few mistakes because I memorized how words are written reading was an issue for me later in highschool but it was because of my eyesight. Things like that are well diagnosed and treated now. Either with practice different coping techniques or using equipment or extra time.
Later in life you may notice some minor issues that can be overcome when you know what's wrong and get a proper treatment.
For me it is mostly slow reading and spelling mistakes which get really bad when I write fast.
Try asking your school nurse to refer you to a test.

Hey, I was diagnosed with dyslexia at 9 years old and ADHD when I was 16 years old. For many years thing I attributed to my dyslexia were actually ADHD. My dad also has Dyslexia and ADHD. I’m female and especially for ADHD the presentation of neurodiversity can differ massively between male and female. But I resonate with everything you said as would my dad. A lot of what you describe (specifically around reading and writing) sounds very much like dyslexia. Some of the other things (specifically around memory) resonates more with ADHD but can be dyslexia.

I would suggest looking at the ‘British dyslexia association’ dyslexia screening. This is what I was initially given before being assessed

https://www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/dyslexia/how-is-dyslexia-diagnosed/dyslexia-screening

If you feel it would benefit you I would suggest also looking at the ‘clinic partners’ ADHD test.

https://www.clinical-partners.co.uk/for-adults/adult-adhd-add/test-for-adhd

Since being diagnosed I have looked at the question and they are exactly the questions I was asked when I was given the ADHD “indicator test”.

Both are used to indicator whether someone may benefit from an assessment

You can self refer for a dyslexia assessment through the British dyslexia association. The only way to have it for “free” is by being funded by a school, university or employer. If your school/uni agrees to fund your assessment you can still go through the British dyslexia association. Be aware you need to of had a sight test within the last two years.

If you/parent/others are able to fund it you can refer yourself through the British dyslexia association.
It is also possible to contact charities who may fund or partly fund it.

Hey depending on your age it may be possible to have it without your mum being informed. As long as the school agrees to fund it you can do most of the referral yourself through the British dyslexia association.

In that case as far as I’m aware as you are under 16. It’s at the schools discretion. To my knowledge there is no legal requirement for them to inform your mum but I don’t believe there’s any law against them informing your mum. I know people who as young as primary school were assessed without the parents being informed. But laws and policies may have changed since then. If the school would have to contact your mum would it be any better if the school made it seem like their idea. Such as saying they noticed signs and they want to have you assessed?

That’s definitely a good option. If you really need you can attempt to contact an organisation who will fund an assessment but I’m not sure how common this is. You can qualify for accesses requirements without a diagnosis and this can also be submitted as evidence for a dyslexia assessment. It might be worth asking the school for a dyslexia screening (as far a I know all schools have the ability to do this). Presuming it indicates you should be assessed from there you may be able to talk to the school about the issues with your mum to see if they would assess you without informing her

Not with assessment but I’ve had school telling my parents things that just weren’t necessary that cause issues. So I get where you’re coming from. Do you know any staff in the school who work form the SEND (special education needs department)/ ALS (additional learning support)/ the other million names it has?

In my experience (Of 2 primary schools, secondary school and 2 sixth forms) the staff who work for SEND tend to be quite good at keeping things to themselves. So it might be worth talking to one you know. Or looking to talk to someone high up in the department who seems nice just to investigate. Another alternative option is if your school has a councillor you can see (who doesn’t have a 10 year waiting list that is) it might be worth talking to them. Typically they are heavily linked with the department and due to privacy regulations as you aren’t telling them anything that puts you or someone as risk they can’t tell your mum. They may be able to give you an idea of your options
