Remtek DSA CON ARTISTS

Hi there, please excuse any disjointed sentences.

I have just received confirmation regarding an assessment i had for DSA where they recommended a laptop and some software. The allotted costs amount to ~£1500 after my £200 is taken into account. Trouble is, firstly, the laptop they are trying to give me is absolutely not fit for purpose for running the recommended software, plus the software I would need for my course. Secondly, Remtek (the company responsible for supplying the laptop and software) are claiming the laptop cost is £312 (the specs are dreadful. TN screen, 8gb soldered RAM, low power AMD CPU).
That leaves approximately £1200 left for a laptop bag, a crappy mic, and some software. Albeit, one piece of the software is expensive. But even taking that into account at its RETAIL price (They would have volume licences that are significantly cheaper) would leave ~£500.

Im getting fairly desperate here, with deadlines coming up soon and a bit overwhelmed with what to do.

Any help much appreciated

Hiya, I barely reply to discussions so excuse me if my answer isn't proper.

I too am with Remtek. The original computer was also at £312 and with my contribution at £200 DSA would pay £112 + they would pay for all my other software such as gleam, present pal v6, scholarcy and etc, totalling about £1800~

I'm not sure what you mean by 1500£? Unless you're looking at your DSA2 document that has the full price.

I didn't want to go for the WKH15 notebook laptop as I wanted one that would last me beyond 3 years, and also I fancied a gaming laptop. With your Remtek suppliers email you should've received an Upgrades sheet.

Your best bet is to look at that sheet and choose a laptop you'd like then email in for a Quote. I asked for three laptop quotes one being the Helios gaming laptop, the Nitro gaming laptop and the Samsung Book4 360. You CAN also find a laptop on curry's or whatever links they give you they accept upgrade requests from, and send that to them for a quote! E.g if you find a laptop that's better than the WKH but low enough for you just send that link to the upgrades team and you'll get a quote.

Your quote will probably be around The original price of your chosen laptop-150£ so you'd have to pay that amount. E.g I paid £1043.42 because I wanted the Samsung laptop (the gaming one I figured was too heavy to carry to Uni + I can always invest later).

Remtek also do installments, although you won't get your equipment until its all fully paid.

I say try to get quotes of different laptops. If you are really desperate then contact DSA Capita/SFE (can't recall which but try emailing capita DSA first) to see if you can switch suppliers!

Also please bare in mind there is no rush. I'm on a gap year, and it's my first time doing DSA. When I made an initial DSA appointment and I wasn't sure about attending University the assessor said I could do my assessment in the summer if I even wanted too.

With remtek too, I asked and they also said that as long as it is within 6 months of receiving your DSA2/Confirmation letter that you can still order and receive quotes. After that 6 months they'd have to call SFE/Capita (again not quite sure) to confirm that there aren't any changes.

Sorry for the long reply, hope this helps.

How long did you have to wait for Remtek to provide a quote?

May I ask if you are adding this correctly?

As its paid for the duration of the course not a one off, for example if you need an expensive software they need to license it for the whole course. The last page in your assessment will highlight quantity

Don't. get me wrong though I think its a complete exploitation of the vulnerable, the laptops are priced higher than high street costs and they get a high amount for maintaining it too.

The basic laptop is your £200 plus (rounding off) £240 from student finance so £440, I cannot get a straight answer out of anyone which is interesting considering the exclusion of disabled people in decision making and informed consent.

I tried to upgrade to a £800 laptop and they wanted £832 which includes the £240 from Student finance.

You do have the option to purchase directly and student finance will reimburse, they request adequate insurance and warranty but wont say what that actually looks like but in my case, study tech are already getting £700 for the basic laptop

I'm in a similar situation. On the top of that what it drives me crazy is how Remtek can have 4.9* reviews, and to find a comment like yours I had to went in a very deep rabbit hole.

did the issue get resolved because i’m going through a similar situation and my allowance was £1911.31. i even mentioned that i would need a laptop suitable for my course (ethical hacking and cyber security). no idea why they’re spending so much of my allowance on software that isn’t relevant to my course. i sent two emails to student finance DSA team since longer than a week ago and no response. currently waiting for them to answer the phone lmao. i don’t see why they can’t repurpose the funds towards assets that are actually required for my course. i start uni on monday and it’s just stressing me out tbh

Same situation here. I'm trying to sort this out for my daughter. There 'basic' tech kit laptop is very basic and not fit for purpose, so like everyone else we are looking at the upgrade. I would purchase elsewhere but they pre-install the software before shipping which would be a pain for my daughter if she had to wait for me to install it all.
Remtek are terrible at replying, and don't answer the phone either, they contradict themselves with pricing and where they purchase the laptops. Their quotes last 7 days, so we needed a re-quote, they added £55.59! When I checked the price on line from where they say they purchase (because I accept that prices do change) the price minus the £112 contribution from DSA should be £30 less than they are charging.
We had no choice with suppliers so I'm looking at handing over £465 to a company I don't trust. I would like to know how Remtek get their contract to supply DSA students and will be contacting the Uni to recommend they use a different company.
You can buy your own and supply a receipt to DSA. Tell them you would like to do so beforehand obviously, they reimbursed me £300 and something.

It's almost nothing to do with the university, all to do with Student Finance.

I have had numerous issues with Remtek systems ltd on behalf of capita:

Firstly, to echo the OP they recommended a laptop that is woefully inadequate; Lenovo Yoga 6 (battery life is 4hrs50mins) Full day of lectures is 6 hours; not to mention prep before in the morning- so not fit for purpose! And slow beyond recognition (8GB ram). Not to mention when running Mindview software (my main reason for getting my laptop from them).

Secondly, their repair process is laborious; to say the least!
On sending in my first laptop for software repair (Lenovo Yoga 6):

They want me to confirm I accept some data protection; both times I've booked a repair, they've asked me to confirm this, twice (total of 4 times)! Saying both times: that they haven't received the first reply (when it shows as sent on my email).

Adding insult to injury, they claim they couldn't find the issue the first time (USB dongle notification sound going off constantly).

Subsequently, I had to purchased a new laptop (from them)-My deadlines were looming!

Then, they quoted the wrong price for a Samsung galaxy book3 360. Over £200 too high. Luckily, I checked !

Fingers crossed they sort the issue out this time (touchscreen issues and malware).

CON ARTIST's seems right (but actually that is too nice a term for them) !

My advice in retrospect is to get in there early and if you get
Remtek as your provider; get advice on changing from your DDS (disability service at University).
Or get your laptop yourself; and have a back up laptop.
Send your uni use laptop to remtek for software installation.
Or ask for codes to do it digitally yourself if you can.

This situation, alongside mine and unfortunately many others is rather similar and very common!!!
I have been in regular contact with sfe about the advertising of £26,000 per student PER YEAR and what rules constitute to the equipment requirements not being met?! I am a multi media artist and photographer, the whole department runs on apple mac, they do not provide laptops as reasonable adjustments and im unable to use the allocated Mac desktop facilities due to my disabilities and the fact i work part time so half of my time is spent in my home studio!
The laptop offered has been repeatedly questioned and refuted directly by both my department lead and IT department as not being suitable to run simultaneous applemac applications plus the allotted specialist software needed to complete the application of study related requirements of the course!
They cant seem to find anyone in management at sfe who is able to explain why my equipment that falls within (in fact is only 1/6th of the recommended yearly quota!) the government recommendations cannot be supplied?
They insist on me paying £1800 towards the equipment, so i asked why i cant use my allowence as altogether its only 1/6th of it!!! They are currently “looking into the situation” with someone from the government!!!
Its absolutely abhorrent to think that the government is willing to advertise the sum of £26k……which frankly no one is going to get anywhere near even if that was over the full 3 year degree!
Im willing to fight them for this gross misinformation and clear abuse of the disability rights act!
Its the same with pip, i had to push them (with enough evidence) to a week before my set tribunal date for them to find someone with enough experience and knowledge to say “sorry we have made a mistake” at this point i think
The government are unfortunately using disability and age to highly discriminate against them

I only used them for the stuff that my old Uni’s Disabled student support team recommended that I got. This was because my degree was in Games design, so I knew I would need a really good spec laptop that could run the software I needed for my course. My advice would be to look at what brands have good deals on their student stores, like when I got mine Apple were offering money off and free AirPods
im struggling with Remtek. My daughter's DSA was confirmed about 6 weeks ago, she was awarded a desktop computer.(plus software/printer etc) we were told by capita that it would be sufficient for running all the heavy software (video/music etc) but she has been awarded a really basic computer that is not sufficient. so they are awaiting £200 to pay plus now the upgrade fee's but there are no prices and nobody will tell us what the cost is to upgrade.

we keep asking detailed questions but keep getting sent a 'laptop list' and has been told she is getting a laptop despite the DSA list stating (desktop pc, keyboard, mouse, speakers etc) I asked simple questions which get ignored.

from searching online I found a better spec PC than what remtek offer for £162 refurbished from dell.

if we dont bother with Remtek can we still get the other bits (headphones, printer etc) without paying the £200.. She's borrowing my laptop at the min, but needs to get her own computer.

When I was at uni in 2020 I had a different dsa supply company and it was all very straight forward and autism friendly, I placed my order straight away as it was laid out simple and I selected the laptop I wanted. Remtek seem awful almost like a con.

if I dont buy the computer from them can I still get the software?

We didn't choose to have a computer through Remtek, just got a printer, headphones etc and those were delivered with the codes for the software. So no, nothing has been paid. (I'd be impressed if any student manages to master and use it all though!)
I dont have any experience with remtek but I did recently have the laptop list through with study tech. It seems like others have said, they pay around 200 for the laptop, you pay around 200 and then anything ontop. I compared the prices and specs directly and a lot of them are older laptops, so I suggest using an AI like chat gpt to explain to you the differences in specs. I ended up paying about 15 quid for an upgrade to a Lenovo V15 G4 AMN (82YU00U8UK). Which was the 'newest' spec and the best value for money, especially when you consider the warranty ontop. It seems as others have stated, it may be better to get your own laptop and then be reimbursed.

DSA will fund insurance and warranty - you have to send receipts for the premiums.
