basically, the city campus is what used to be UMIST, so even though they are both run by he same accomodation people mainly umist students went to those halls. not sure how much this has changed with the merger, but chances are unless you are doing a course that would have been a umist one, most of your lectures would be in the south campus area, which is probably equidistant between fallowfield and the middle of town. fallowfield really isnt that far from uni, it takes me about 45 minutes to walk from the far end and i have short legs. and there are hundreds of buses a day, while there dont seem to be taht many in the city centre campus area. also in fallowfield you have sainsburys, all the delighful student pubs and clubs and probably no one over the age of 24. which is great if that's your thing. i didnt live in the city centre halls so i dont know for sure, but to me they seem a bit isolated, and the only good thing if you dont go to umist is that all the shops are around the corner, which isnt really a bonus when it comes to credit card abuse. also you donthave a decent supermarket like in fallowfield which isnt great if you dont have a car.

i was in canterbury court which is self catered and en-suite and it was pretty good, large rooms, quite modern, cleaned and so on. this is in the victoria park area, which is closer to uni than fallowfield, about a 20 minute walk, but there isnt really much around in terms of shops and so on, only a grotty-ish pub, tesco express and a turkish store. but nothing is a million miles away and its a decent alternative from fallowfield. richmond park is very nice, very attractive from the outside and next to all the sporty business. also there are so many other halls in that small area that socially, i would imagine it is great.

I would avoid anything with the name Fairfield in it, thats the red light district to eastern edge of the city centre, however I wouldn't personaly want to live in Fallowfield either because I would like to be able to get to sleep at times and I also know some real nasty pieces of work that live in the area.

Fallowfield is a bit of a myth, rents are quite expensive while house prices are cheap, what this means is nobody wants to live there apart from students. Now if you're into studenty things that is fine, but after a while the noise, mess and pollution (Wilsmlow Road) will get to you, for this reason I see no disadvantage of living in the city centre however I would avoud the eastern edge. New Hulme may also be worth considering, its just 5 minutes walk from the university, although most the people who live there seem to be either RNCM or MMU students.

I think the problem with Victoria Park is its isolated and is quite rough, it also has been a traditional rough area. Although much of this may not apply to student halls.

Personaly I wouldn't move to Fallowfield but then I have 22 years of local knowledge I know they are nicer. quiter areas which still have plenty of bars and take aways and still only 20 minutes from the university by bus, which can be rented for the same price. Although the population of these areas tend to be older, and there is more like 10% students living in these places instead of the 50% of Fallowfield.

Fallowfield is divided into three sections

Students: 50%
Council house tenants: 40%
Privatly owned houses: 10%

Lol, our flat tutor warned us about the red light district! I think Fairfield hall is for post grads and Lambert for undergrads but I'm not sure. I'm living on the city campus this year and wanted to stay in this area because it's a good location. I changed my mind though after going to Fallowfield a few times to look at houses, because the bus ride really isn't too bad. I'm living in Rusholme next year just between the two areas!

im looking for self-catered en-suite accomodation.

i like the look of:

lambert and fairfield hall (city campus)
western hall (city campus)
richmond hall (fallowfield campus)

is it a bit of a bastard living in fallowfield with it being a few miles away from the uni?

do you get the same sense of community in a city campus that you would in the fallowfield with it being so studenty?

any help appreciated.

My advice to you would be to spend your first year in Fallowfield. You will always have students around you, and in many ways it is only Fallowfield that offers you the typical Manchester student experience. Typical may or may not be a good thing for you, but at least you'll have experienced it and you can always live somewhere else in your second or third year! I lived in Richmond Park and loved it. However, as with all flat based accommodation, a lot depends on the people you live with. There wasn't a huge amount of inter-flat socialising which I didn't mind, as my flatmates rocked. However, other people were not so lucky. In many respects that is the benefit of traditional halls... you'll be sharing a corridor with loads of people and you will find people you like where as you need to be lucky with a flat!
