does first year grade in uni matters when applying for master degree?

im currently a year one student in ucl and the first year grade weighted 1/9 of the final grade in my module, and i admit that I took minimal effort through this year and can only secure a passing mark for most module, which i really regret about(at the start of the year i heard a lot ppl saying that first year doesnt matter). what should i do now im so anxious???does my first year grade gonna drag me dowm from applying a master degree in ucl???
For most unis it probably won’t, as you tend to need at least a 1:2 for your final grade to do a masters

Hi, thank you very much for reply! does this matters for ucl master degrees? if i study really hard in year 2 and obtain a decent grade will the admission officer reject my application based on my grade in year 1?

I wouldn’t be able to tell you for sure, but if you pull your average grade up by putting in the work I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t be able to do a masters. As long as you meet the entry requirements, you should be good I think

Hi,
I'm currently studying my masters at York St John, and as far as I'm aware they didn't take my first year grades into account, and mainly looked at my final classification, and presumably my second and third year grades since they were the grades that impacted my overall classification.

I'm not sure about UCL but I know most uni's don't take first year grades into account as they most the time they don't impact the final classification, but this does vary across courses and uni's.

If your worried about your first year grades impacting doing a masters, maybe email the admissions team, just to give you some peace of mind?

I hope this helps.

Hi Suzan,
Thank you very much for your reply! For my course, it counts towards 1/9th of my final grade. May I ask when I should apply for a master's program? I have seen quite a few people saying they apply during their third year, using their 1st and 2nd year grades. Can I apply for a master's program after I graduate from my BSc so I can use my 2nd and 3rd year grades? Will I have to take a gap year?
Best regards

Hi i am sorry to bother you again, here is the entry requirement of the master program that i wanted to apply: A minimum of an upper-second class Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from a recognised university. Applicants not meeting this standard may be considered if they have significant relevant experience.
if i put in works next year will i be able to achieve upper-second class even my first year is bad?

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply!

I applied for masters course in July last year, after I had received all my grades back and my overall classification had been confirmed. But I did start to have a look around at different masters courses around March/April of last year. I think you can apply a lot earlier than I did, it really depends on the university and if they require the full transcript with the application or not. From speaking to people on my course, everyone seemed to apply at a similar time as I did.

In regards to, getting a 2:1 next year, that is definitely possible, if not even achieving higher. I found that I did better in my second and third year, than I did in my first. I found that booking tutorials with my lecturers regarding feedback, really helped. I also really made an effort to you use a wide range of sources, not just the ones supplied on the reading list.

I'm not sure if UCL weights the second and third year grades differently depending on which year that you did better in, but I know that YSJ does and quite a few other uni's do. For example I did a lot better in third year so it was double weighted (66%) and my second year was worth 33% of my overall classification.

I hope this help!
