Course Change

Hi I'm an offer holder for Sociology at Bristol, but am thinking that I'd like to change to English with French. Is it possible to change courses once you've started at university?

I’ld probably try swapping it in the summer. I swapped from Marketing to Law a couple weeks ago at a different uni. Just email admissions, and as long as u meet the requirements and there are vacancies you should be fine

You can ask to change courses. Whether it will be possible will depend on things like whether you meet the admissions requirements for the course you want to change to, and whether or not there are spaces available on that course. Plus there's normally a very tight time limit on getting the change approved -- you might only be able to change within the first couple of weeks of teaching.

You also need to have thought through what you'll do if they say no -- will you choose to continue with Sociology? Or withdraw and reapply to start in September 2025?

It would be much better to talk to Bristol's admissions team now, and ask whether they would be prepared to give you can offer to do the new programme. That way you'll know where you stand and can make your decisions accordingly.

Note that it tends to be a bad idea to start a course you don't intend to see through to the end.

By the time you reopen UCAS on Results Day all decisions about who to accept for each course will have already been made and a switch may not be possible. If you ask now, you have far more chance of them saying Yes.

I would speak to Student Services right away, they would rather have a student change courses than leave. I know quite a few people who leapt from one social science subject to another
