Should I take A-Level Math?

I'm already almost finished with Year 11 and doing my GCSEs currently, and I did already submit my A Level choices to the schools I applied to but I know they allow you to change your subjects in the first few weeks.

I'm thinking of maybe doing Math but I'm not sure? I like doing the subject at GCSE and it's enjoyable for me but I don't know if I like it ENOUGH to take it at A-Level? I'm predicted a 7 and I'm pretty confident I'll get a good GCSE result but I'm not sure. I don't want to regret taking it and then suffer for 2 years.

I don't know what I want to do in the future either and whether I want to go into a math related profession or course at university like economics etc. so that's making me even more confused. On top of that, I don't really know if I'm capable of doing 4 A-Levels.

I've chosen to do Biology because I really like it, Business and Physics because I enjoy it but I'm doubting whether I can handle 4-A-Levels worth of work. I could take it as an AS-Level but I don't think the schools I applied to offer Math as an AS-Level.

I also kind of want to take it because A-Level Physics on it's own is basically useless and taking it with A-Level Math gives me more options but I don't know if I'll like A-Level Math or if it'll be too hard for me?

And no I'm not considering taking A-Level Further Maths in case anyone was going to ask. That'd be too much hell.

I wouldn't want to put you off but I got an 8 at gcse maths and I'm struggling so hard towards the end of year 12. At the moment I'm predicted a C it came really natural to me during secondary but now it feels like a whole new subject. It utterly depends on your career path and what unis you aspire to join as maths is arguably the most valuable a level a person can take. Don't be fooled and take subjects that you "enjoy" because that isn't what it's about. If you're planning to go into finance/economics, etc maths should be a must imo.

If you want to know if maths is for you take a look at some as/a level past papers and look at the content and know if you see yourself doing this.

And about the 4 a-levels, I would recommend taking only 3 (you'll see why in year 12), people naively take 4 a levels thinking it's a breeze but a lot of people quickly drop a subject. It's up to you but just know that the reward of 4 a levels is far less than the effort and struggle of doing it. I say do 3, as doing great with 3 subjects is always better than doing worse with 4 and it gives you more time to perfect your other courses.

Do you have any idea of what career you want to go into?
I’m also in year 11 rn and I put maths as my fourth option because the sixth forms I applied to required 4 a levels but if I am struggling with it or just don’t like it I can drop it at the end of year 12. You could do this because most sixth forms should allow you to drop a fourth one but starting with four gives you more options and flexibility

Good luck with your GCSEs xx

as was suggested previously, there's no harm in taking four and then dropping maths if you don't like it. i would say that it's better to have maths, because it'll open up a lot more degree options for you.

what sort of a course do you want to do at uni? it's great that you're taking physics and biology, but without chemistry you're shutting off quite a few degree options. i'm not saying it's better to take chemistry - i'm doing it right now and i can imagine it being absolute hell if you didn't enjoy the subject. just keep in mind the pathways you're opening/closing as you pick your a-levels.

four a-levels will be very stressful, and you'll need to be organised to keep on top of it. it's not impossible, but it's obviously more difficult than doing three. however, if that fourth option is maths i'd say it's worth it because it allows you to keep your options more open for longer. especially because you're indecisive right now, i'd say it's a really good idea to take maths for now.

if you can't deal with the workload/changed your mind about something, just drop it later.
sorry if i waffled on a lot there lol

I'm also in year 11, doing Maths, Chemistry, and Physics next year. I get majority 7-9 for my grades, and most of my teachers advised against doing a 4th A-Level (I was considering further maths - i know, right?!).

Point is, do it if you think you'd enjoy it. Everyone struggles with A-Level Maths from what I've heard - one of my best friend's older sisters did it a couple of years ago - and its absolutely a lot of work. On the other hand, she found that it "clicked" someway through the course and she came out with an A (she got an 8 at GCSE).

Also, I'd consider taking what you need for Uni, or whatever you want to do after sixth form/college. I want to do Physics at Uni, hence my options. If you want to do anything Biology or Physics related at Uni, they'll generally ask for maths. Business related, I'm not sure what the requirements would be, but I think it might be worth looking into.

Basically, do what you like to do, and look into what the requirements would be for what you want to do after, that can be a great help. If you're really upset about not doing a subject that aren't on your requirements, you could always look into courses that would need it, or do it as a MOOC. Maths can be a really helpful A-Level, but I wouldn't say do 4, you could really overwork yourself. Best to do 3 very well than 4 adequately. And don't make yourself miserable with your choices.

If you need anything else, I'm here, and I'm in the same year so that might help a bit too. Good luck with your exams, and remember you've got the summer to think it over too! No pressure, lots of time

Could you not try it for a few weeks (as a 4th subject) and see what you think? If you struggle then you can get rid and still have your other 3. And if you are good with it, but dont want to do 4 then you could drop one of your others.
I dont want to put you off. Bu maths is quite a hard a-level. So if you arent 100% sure about taking it then i wouldnt take it.
