Hi there.

As a student ambassador who has been involved in open day events at our university, I feel I can respond to your question.

At previous events, the vast majority of students come to university with their families, but some come with classmates, friends, or alone on their own. It is normal to come to this event with anyone or on your own, with your parents it gives them a chance to find out about the university so they can get to know you, with friends and classmates you can talk about the university together, and by coming on your own it shows that you are already pretty independent.

Lastly, if you want to come to the Open Day on your own but are afraid of being alone, don't worry about it, you can ask for the help of student ambassadors who will accompany you.

Hi there,
I did a mix when I was looking round university. I went to quite a few with my friends and majority with my parents! I’m quite nervous going to things by myself so opted to bring some backup 😂 lots of people do go by themselves however and they seem quite at home. If you are a bit of a lone wolf or your parents aren’t available to attend with you then go for it! I would suggest making a day out of the open day. Look round the city or campus and get a really good idea of the vibe of the place! maybe you could head out for food or grab a drink to help you explore the place a little better!
Best wishes

Either way is fine - and nobody is judging.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your question!

As an ambassador that works often for open days, I usually see a whole range! Most students will come with their family member/s or a friend, although I have met plenty of students who come alone, or with a teacher.

If you are worried about going alone, I would recommend chatting to a student ambassador who will be more than happy to keep you company and answer questions for you throughout the day. You will definitely not be the only person going alone, and often with open days there are plenty of different options for talks and seminars throughout the day, so you have flexibility in where you go and at what time.

Hope this helps

Hi!
I work as a student ambassador at my university and so have been to many open days. Many people attend with their parents however, it is not uncommon to attend alone. Some people attend with partners or friends too. It is varies massively and you are welcome to attend with or without whoever you would like.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hi!

As a student ambassador here at Kingston, it's common to see both, and neither one is necessarily 'better' than the other - some prospective students like to look around the campus themselves and approach open days from a more independent perspective, whilst others enjoy having the insights of their family or friends. It all comes down to personal preference; open day events/talks are usually organised to suit both groups, and you can always talk to any student ambassadors or members of staff on hand if you feel unsure or nervous about anything.

Best of luck with any upcoming open days!

Hi there,

I'm a student ambassador who has worked a range of Open Days throughout the duration of my undergraduate degree and have seen both instances occur.

Many prospective students will tend to come with their parents, especially if they have travelled quite a distance to visit the university. Parents will often like to accompany their child so that they themselves can gain a sense of reassurance for where their child might be studying, and will often ask questions that might not have initially been on the student's radar (such as where the local supermarket is, or where the laundrette is on campus!).

However, I've also seen students visiting with friends, or even on their own which isn't uncommon. (It's worth noting that some students attend with their parents, but then attend subject sessions or tour the campus independently). I would say that no option is necessarily better than the other, it is just down to the student's preference and what they would feel most comfortable with.

During an Open Day, every visitor, whether accompanied or alone, will be made to feel welcome and would never be judged for attending alone. There are plenty of Student Ambassadors and staff members dotted around the campus who are there to help and field any questions or concerns you might have so when attending an Open Day, I would definitely say to make the most of the help they can offer.

I hope you enjoy your Open Days!😃

Best wishes,

Hi there,

The only open day that I've been to was with a friend but we spent most of the day separated because we wanted to study different things anyway. There is no problem going on your own but quite a lot of people do go with parents so it's up to you. You can see here for tips on getting info if you can't attend.

All the best,

Hi, I was wondering if people go to uni open days alone or if the vast majority of people go with their parents?

Hi! I've worked on quite a few open days and offer holder days at Lancaster University. I've noticed that most people will come along with their parents or a friend, but there are still a decent number of people who come alone. I can't speak for other universities, but especially on offer holder days we will usually have some activities that are student only and the parents go off to talks about finance, wellbeing, etc. So you would probably get the same experience regardless of who you do or don't come with! That being said, it really depends on your level of comfort with doing things alone. If you struggle to ask questions or talk to unfamiliar people then it may be better to try and bring someone with you who can help out in that regard.
Good luck!

Hi there,

When I visited University open days, I came with one of my friends as we wanted to look at similar courses however, I believe this varies from person to person. If you are comfortable to go on your own, then you will still make the most of it. If there is family or friends that would like to come along then that is also great as they will be able to see it from a different perspective. It does often range and there will be plenty of people visiting by themselves so it might even be a great opportunity to meet new people 😊

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

There isn't a right or wrong in terms of who you come to uni open days with! Some people come on their own but the majority will come with their parents, or one parent. People also come with their friends and some people do come on their own too so if you do this you won't be the only one.

On an open day, there will be lots of things to do, from Campus tours and accommodation tours to subject talks and lots of other things. There will be loads of people around if you need to ask anyone any questions - there are usually lots of student ambassadors who work the open days and it will be clear who they are so if you were on your own and wanted ask some questions there will be lots of people to ask.

Some people prefer to attend on their own but it depends really. Sometimes it can be beneficial to attend subject talks on your own so you can have a feel of what it will actually be like when you are at uni and some people will take in information better and be able to listen better if they are there on their own.

People who attend with friends usually do this as they both want to attend that uni so if you wanted to go with friends, find out if they are interested in that uni too and they might be able to go with you!

Whatever you choose, open days are great ways to find out lots of information. Nobody would think it was weird if you came on your own and there will be so many people around that people wouldn't even notice!

I hope this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador
