First year grades contribution to final results, LLB

Hello, I'm doing my LLB honours from the University of London and wanted to ask whether it's true that first year grades do not count in the final results?

It depends on university. Law first year grades tend not to count, but you'll have to check. Maybe ask a second year student who might know, or check on your university's website

They don’t tend to count (can vary by uni so you’d need to check). However, I’d say law is one of the only courses where your first-year grades *can* matter. Many students apply for insight schemes, vacation schemes and mini-pupillage either during or at the end of year one, or early on in year two (where you’re unlikely to have year two grades yet). Most decent firms/chambers will want to see solid grades in year one therefore. Some ask just for the overall grade, some may even want a breakdown by module. It depends of course, but if you got a low 2:2 at the end of first-year and were applying with that, you might not be competitive enough and would then possibly need to work hard in year two to overcome that. I think to be safe, most would expect to see a 2:1 or very close at the end of year one. It’s not an absolute deal breaker, but as most want to see you can achieve a 2:1 overall, then it does help to get the best grades you can in year one.

The best person to ask is one of the academic staff at the university. Most academics don't bite!

I can definitely confirm that King's College London first year grades do not count. Though this might be a holdover from the pandemic, so I would verify the policy at your university.
