They don’t tend to count (can vary by uni so you’d need to check). However, I’d say law is one of the only courses where your first-year grades *can* matter. Many students apply for insight schemes, vacation schemes and mini-pupillage either during or at the end of year one, or early on in year two (where you’re unlikely to have year two grades yet). Most decent firms/chambers will want to see solid grades in year one therefore. Some ask just for the overall grade, some may even want a breakdown by module. It depends of course, but if you got a low 2:2 at the end of first-year and were applying with that, you might not be competitive enough and would then possibly need to work hard in year two to overcome that. I think to be safe, most would expect to see a 2:1 or very close at the end of year one. It’s not an absolute deal breaker, but as most want to see you can achieve a 2:1 overall, then it does help to get the best grades you can in year one.
