The Student Room Group

anyone else stressing about shared accom in Penryn??

Falmouth seems like my dream uni because it's in such a pretty and peaceful place. However, the one thing really putting me off is the fact that 1/3 of the accommodation at the Penryn Campus is shared??? literally why???

I put it as my firm choice anyway, and put the shared rooms as my absolute last choice (because you had to put all the choices down for some godawful reason). But there's still a good chance that I lose the lottery and get a shared room anyway. I'm really not lucky with these sorts of things.

The worst thing about it is that my mental health is... rocky. I have suffered with anxiety my whole life but I have never gotten help or had it diagnosed (woww way to take care of yourself, I know). And now that's gone and bitten me in the arse because you can't make a special request without a medical diagnosis - which is completely fair, but shite for me.

So now I am sitting here bracing myself for the worst possible scenario and I'm worried it's going to ruin my summer. This is genuinely stressing me out more than my psychology exam 😭

Anyway, rant over. I'm just wondering if anyone is in the same situation?? If anyone has shared rooms rn, how are they finding it?? And is it possible to change it if you get assigned one?? I don't want my hypothetical roommate to be stuck with someone who doesn't even want them there :frown:

Thanks for reading all of this if you actually stuck around haha

Me too. I really love the course and location, but the accomodation is worrying me. They mentioned that you would find out your room at the end of May, or the end of June. I haven't found out today (last day of may), so have another month of worrying ☹️
Glad I'm not the only one...

wishing good luck for us though 🤞

my boyfriend was at penryn campus this year and one of his flatmates who was in a shared room, moved flat cus she didn’t get along with her roommate and then she got moved into her own room so if you do then there is always that option because they do get a lot of empty flats

I’m going into my third year and every person I knew who got a shared room at glasney was able to get a single room. Either they moved out or the other student did and you get the shared room space to yourself. Just tell them that you have very bad mental health and they’ll move you. (That’s what everyone I know did, whether they had poor mental health or not I know it’s bad but you have to do what you have to do.) I put sidings as my first choice and luckily I got that. What you will have to worry about though is finding accommodation in 2nd and 3rd year. The market is absolutely atrocious here and rent prices keep going up every year. You’re lucky to find a place for under £600 before bills. If I’d give you any advice, stay far far away from Lang Llewellyn!!!!!!!

Oh I haven't heard back yet. Maybe it is to do with when you applied?? I sent my application on the 22nd of April, when did you apply? Hopefully I hear back soon!

I applied on the 21st April (almost twins!!) and I haven’t heard anything yet either! I didn’t know they were sending offers already so it’s great to hear that we probably won’t be waiting until end of July 😅

I went to Falmouth and I really wouldn’t worry about the shared rooms, most people either turn up and their flatmate hasn’t moved in or people drop out and everyone ends up in their own room anyway. There’s a list you can go on to take someone’s room if they drop out and I didn’t know anyone with room mates by the end of it

Please don't worry; you're more likely not to have a shared room than you are to have one, and many people I know who did receive one this year became close friends with their roommate and were able to switch to a single room by October/November if they wished to.

If accommodation applications haven't closed yet, there's still time for you to get an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) through Falmouth University to address your anxiety and ensure you do not get given a shared room with a roommate.
To receive an ILP for a mental health condition, all you need is a letter from your GP describing your condition and explaining how it affects you; the date of how long your anxiety has been affecting you can be backdated to when you started experiencing the mental health condition, so don't worry about not going to the doctor about it sooner.
I do recommend applying for DSA for your anxiety. To do this, I would make sure to print off the Disabled Students' Allowances Disability Evidence Form for your GP to fill out, as this makes sure that all the correct questions to receive your DSA are filled out.

Getting a letter from your GP or the form filled out may cost £35 or so, but it is absolutely worth it if you can afford it as it allows you to receive the correct accommodations you deserve due to your mental health condition.
I have anxiety myself and have an ILP with the University and receive DSA.

My ILP means that my lecturers understand my mental health condition and the limitations that come with it; I don't have to do presentations if I don't feel able to and can leave lectures if I feel overwhelmed.

My DSA provided me with many helpful software that I could not have otherwise afforded, including Glean, which records and transcribes my lectures for me to look back on and allows me to link typed notes to the exact points where my lecturers spoke. I also have access to Speechify, a high-quality text-to-speech software that can read websites, essays and more for me. Lastly, I have access to Grammarly Premium, which helps me massively with assignments and writing things like this.

If you aren't able to see your GP until after the accommodation deadline has passed, don't panic. The accommodation and disability team should be able to work together with your ILP to change your accommodation offer to give you a shared room but with single occupancy (so you won't have a roommate) if you've initially been given a shared room.

I do understand how daunting seeing your GP about your condition can be, but they are there to help, and you are allowed to bring a friend or family member to be there with you and support you during the process.

If you have any further questions about accommodation ILPs, or anything about Falmouth, I am happy to answer them.

Ive just got my accommodation back today and its a shared room, hoping to appeal to try and get it changed as soon as I get down there. I'm in a similar situation as yourself with rocky mental health and I'm currently waiting for an autism diagnostic assessment in August and with these factors it makes sharing personal space extremely difficult. Even if said roommate is a lovely person, I still need to be able to have my own private space to calm myself down from anxiety situations so I'm just as scared as you are. I'm sure we aren't the only ones

I really hope you're able to change rooms!! I totally get that having your own space to calm down is super important-- same here!! If you do get your autism diagnosis then it should hopefully be easier bc u can apply for an ILP

Thankfully I was lucky enough to get my own room so I don't have to worry anymore 🥲 I hope you get yours too ❤️ i hate how it's such a gamble lol

What you might be able to do is speak to accessibility and accommodation about the fact you’re waiting on an autism diagnosis and your mental health issues, you can go to your GP and ask them to write a letter to specifically state that you are unable to share a bedroom at university due to your suspected autism and mental health conditions, they can address it directly to the university accommodation and accessibility teams. These letters can cost about £35 if I remember correctly but I did the same when I received a shared room initially and the cost was worth it as they quickly switched me to a shared room but with a single occupancy so I wouldn’t have to share it with anyone, I hope this is helpful x

I was given a shared room initially but just last week was sent an email about some single rooms that had become available, first come, first serve. Fortunately I was quick enough to nab one! Feeling much easier about everything now.
