Changes to English Folio 2024-2025 (Nat 5, Higher, Adv Higher)

I was just wondering what everyone thought about the changes to the English course for next year (2024-2025). Basically if you don't know, presumably due to the rise of generative AI (ChatGPT and the like), the SQA are saying that everyone has to complete the first draft of their folio in class time, under teacher supervision.

https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/45672.html (explains it further for each qualification here)

Personally, this has given me a lot of anxiety. I'm a decent writer but I work best in private/at my own pace, I can't stomach the idea of a teacher watching over me as I do so! I'm not even sure how this would help any concerns. But, maybe I'm overthinking this as we've not even started that school session, so I just wanted to know how anyone else who is sitting Nat 5 / Higher / Adv Higher this year or next year felt, in case I really just need to suck it up and get on with it. Also I hope I haven't given anyone any early anxiety as well haha

Do you know if this means you do a write up of your first draft in class time or does it mean you can only work on your first draft during class time?
It's a shame because like you, I would prefer to work on my folio at home 🙁.

I honestly have no idea. I’m going back to school next week so if I’ve got any clarity I will let you know. I’m doing advanced higher so it would’ve been best for me to maybe do my folio over the summer as I have another write up I need to do! This does not seem like a good idea. Hard to believe that teachers signed off on this. Surely it creates an even bigger workload?

Yeah I am not sure, I will be going into S6 next week but doing higher English. I wonder how strictly these new rules will be inforced, it probally will increase workload as the teachers will have to make sure everyone has completed there first draft and people work at different paces, could be very time consuming if you have to do lots of research before beginning to write. Or do you think they would allow research to be done at home? But if a few people in your class are off for a few days then they could become very behind with foilo as not allowed to catch up at home for first draft. I don't know much about AI, do you think it's becoming a big problem in schools?

So I did higher Gàidhlig (fluent Gaelic) this year which has some of the same compents as English course (like RUAE, writing essay on poem + some different compents from English). But we also did a folio which is the same idea as the English folio I wrote for national 5. But I checked the qualifaction on the SQA website and they haven't added this update, maybe AI doesn't know Gáidhlig? Or it could be because of smaller class sizes in Gáidhlig allowing teachers to get to know your writing style. I did do a folio write up for Gáidhlig (which you had acess to your most recent draft and then wrote it up to help fix you grammar).
This is what it says on the course specifications about the assingement for Gáidhlig.

Honestly, I keep to myself a lot so I can’t judge how big it is. I’m a writer + avid reader and excel at English so I’d never dream of doing so but it might be different for my peers. Looking at the internet isn’t a good indicator either as it creates an echo chamber and makes it look like the entire world is using AI when that’s not the case. I’ve seen a couple of articles that show that actually not a lot of people use AI and apparently 42% of British people haven’t even heard of ChatGPT*. Even amongst people our age who are more likely to use it, I don’t think the stats are that high. Less than 1 in 5, I believe. Either way, if people use it I don’t think they are stupid enough to directly copy and paste but definitely use it as an influence. What sucks about this is sometimes, there’s not a specific way of telling just from “looking at it” sometimes, as I’ve heard of many people submitting their own writing into “AI detectors” and it coming up as being written by AI despite it being made before ChatGPT is even a thing. I don’t want to undermine any of the teachers involved in this but it feels like they are not truly thinking of the implications of “spotting” AI. I don’t think most adults do. I think it was this month or last month some dude on twitter tried to say that he knew instantly that someone used ChatGPT if they used the word “delve”. I truly think this will do more harm than good but I don’t think the SQA seem to care about that too much considered how they brought back course assignments despite many teachers begging them not to do so. I wish there was something I / other people could do about this, like write to the SQA but I seriously don’t want to overstep boundaries. Looks like we will have to pray for a miracle or get through this 😕

Honestly, I’m not sure. Where I’m from although I think there’s a rise in people wanting to learn it, Gàidhlig is so uncommon of a subject. But I suppose more people would have motive to use ChatGPT to translate their own written work from English to Gàidhlig…I’m happy at least they’ve left the Gàidhlig out of this mess. I hope that my teachers can give us a bit more leniency in this as for advanced higher we’ve not only got to write our folios but a separate dissertation as well. Lord have mercy

Thank you for taking the time to come back to me. I have just started the higher English course this week. And my teacher has given us two weeks to have compliated the first draft of our folio and completed a paired talk 🙁! Did you find out a bit more of the impact of this change on your advanced higher course?

Your teacher seems tough. My higher teacher set our deadline for the end of October. My Adv Higher teacher reassured us that he’d make it as easier as possible for us to work on our folio we don’t have a strict word count so he offered us working on some in class and then working on it at home. I hope you get on well this year

Gang we finished this school year and am happy to say that we never had to write our essay in class. We were given 2 tries to make a draft and then we make a final draft. (Btw we give it to the teacher and they see where u should I improve but they never gave us a mark). We then handed in our final draft and that’s it. We never wrote anything under supervision in class.
