Can I become a Speech and Language Therapist?

Hi there, I am currently in year 13 studying Sociology, English combined (Lit and Lang) and Business.
My first choice is a Primary Education course at Sheffield Hallam in September, but recent tiktok’s are making me question my choices.
I’ve looked at postgrad degrees studying Speech and Language Therapy, but unsure whether an undergraduate in Primary Education would allow me to get on such course? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!!

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: If you look through the job profiles for speech and language therapist....
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/job-profiles/speech-and-language-therapist
https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/allied-health-professionals/roles-allied-health-professions/speech-and-language-therapist
https://www.prospects.ac.uk/job-profiles/speech-and-language-therapist
https://www.careerpilot.org.uk/job-sectors/childcare/job-profile/speech-and-language-therapist
https://www.life-pilot.co.uk/job-sectors/childcare/job-profile/speech-and-language-therapist
...you will find that there is a list of approved degrees you can pick from in order to get into the profession. The applicable bodies are: the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

If you look on the RCSLT website, you would find the following:
https://www.rcslt.org/speech-and-language-therapy/become-a-speech-and-language-therapist/university-degrees/hei-list/

The following MScs would accept an undergrad in any subject, including primary education:
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/taught-degrees/speech-and-language-therapy-msc
https://www.city.ac.uk/prospective-students/courses/postgraduate/speech-and-language-therapy#accordion513943-header513943
https://www.uclan.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/speech-language-therapy-pre-registration-msc
https://www.mmu.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/course/msc-speech-and-language-therapy-pre-registration#course-information
https://www.qmu.ac.uk/study-here/postgraduate-study/2024/msc-speech-and-language-therapy-pre-registration/ (will require relevant experience)

The following would accept undergrads in education:
https://www.aecc.ac.uk/course/pre-registration-msc-speech-language-therapy/#requirements
https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/courses/speech-language-therapy-msc/
https://www.lincoln.ac.uk/course/splathms/
https://www.reading.ac.uk/ready-to-study/study/2024/speech-and-language-therapy-pg/msc-speech-and-language-therapy
https://www.bcu.ac.uk/courses/speech-and-language-therapy-msc-2024-25#entry_requirements

The following are degrees that you would need to contact postgrad admissions to double check:
https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/study-here/courses/postgraduate/speech-and-language-therapy#courseEntryRequirements
https://www.essex.ac.uk/courses/pg00803/1/msc-speech-and-language-therapy-pre-registration
https://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/degrees/5104f/

My question to you is if you intend to be a speech and language therapist, why would you want to do an undergrad in primary education prior to doing the master's when you can qualify by just doing an undergrad in speech and language therapy? Isn't that a long round about way of getting into the profession?
Also, why not do the undergrad in speech and language therapy, then leave yourself to doing a PGCE in primary education with QTS later? There are undergrad degrees in speech and language therapy that accept A Levels in any subjects e.g.
https://www.ulster.ac.uk/courses/202425/speech-and-language-therapy-33712#entryconditions
https://www.strath.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/speechlanguagepathology/#entryrequirements
https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/2024/speech-and-language-therapy-bmedsci#entryreqs

I can't comment on the degree in Primary Education at Sheffield Hallam, but I am curious to know why you think TikTok is a good platform to get advice and reviews from.

Hello there, thank you so much for the recommendations.

To answer your questions:
1. It’s only been very recently that I have second guessed a degree in primary education and have only started briefly looking due to my A-level exams, and therefore haven’t looked at a variety of other unis.

2. I understand that a Speech and Language Therapy degree consists of a lot of science (particularly biology) and this is a subject I haven’t studied since GCSEs, and therefore I wasn’t sure whether my current A-level subjects would be applicable. I also understand that my lack of biology knowledge may put me at a disadvantage on a SLT course.

3. I am also aware that I shouldn’t base my opinions on other people’s experience of the Primary Education degree as everyone has different experiences, but of course seeing negative comments on anyone’s uni course would make them worry.

4. Finally, I know it’s not impossible to switch courses at this moment in time, but I would have to assess my options and come to a conclusion to find which course best suited me.

Again, thank you for your support.

Hey, you definitely can!

I would suggest checking the university you want to apply to and what their entry requirements are. Every university is different but from what I’ve gathered they teach you all of the science anyway on the degree and they don’t expect students to have a lot of prior knowledge on anatomy for example.

If you decide to study primary education first then do speech and language at postgrad this would definitely help if you managed to get some experience as teaching assistant/teacher prior to applying to the postgrad. However I would note it’s a lot more competitive to get on to Speech therapy as a postgrad than undergrad.

Hope that helps, good luck!
