Is a Primary Education undergraduate with a part-time job?

Hiya there,

I have applied to Sheffield Hallam Uni for September 2024 to study Primary Education (5-11). On my open day, one of the lecturers mentioned that it would be hard to balance the school placements and a part-time job. I already understand that high intensity of a course like this, but I would definitely need a part-time job to help cover student costs. My parents are very supportive and said that they would help me out with extra costs, but I don't want to become too reliant on them. It would be great to hear from student teachers/teachers who have been through this themselves and how they managed their course whilst working. Thank you!

Hi @fayebarnard06
Whilst I did not study Primary Education I have just completed my PGDE Secondary and do have friends who have just completed the Primary Education course.
It is intense with balancing placement - elements of travel to and from, being at school teaching and all the planning, prep and evaluation - balancing uni work and balancing life in general. One thing is always to remeber that Uni is full time and especially in school and education you need to be your best self to give your all. Having time for yourself to relax, have time with family and also unexpected health or social events is also important.
I personally worked both during my Undergrad and during my PGDE. Whilst it is possible and sometimes (it was for me) necessary it is not easy and does require you to be very organised.
There will be times when you are not on placement and I know from my experience and friends that this was when more part time work could be taken on but this did mean balancing uni work including assignments with work. The other time is during the holidays when you will have less uni deadlines and expectations.
Hope that offers some insight and that another primary education student will respond.

Thank you, I really appreciate your reply!
Was your work understanding of your placements and acknowledge that unlike other courses, a part-time job would need to be more flexible around your course? I know of a few people who did a Primary Ed course and said that their work wasn't very compliant and just wanted to gage an idea if this was the same for everyone. Again, your reply is much appreciated!

Hi,
From my own and friends experience it is always best to be upfront with employers and so then it is expected that there will be busier times in line with when you have more uni placement/ workload/ exams.
Employers can vary and some are more understandable than others. I was lucky with my job that I had flexibility to take on less hours when things were busier and work less during placement. It is a balance and different for everyone.
