The Student Room Group

Any mature students starting uni at either York or Sheffield this year?

Also, does anyone know if either Sheffield or York have an active mature students society? i'm worried about meeting others in a similar position
Any mature students feel free to share your experience at uni.. that would be greatly appreciated!
Hi,
The University of Sheffield has a chat to us function where you can talk to current students, you can search for mature students and then ask the any questions you may have: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/study/chat
There is also a mature students committee who hold regular socials. During the first few weeks at uni, many events are put on and you can trial lots of societies, so there is plenty of opportunity to meet new people.
I hope this helps, just remember many others will be just as nervous as you.
Feel free to ask if you have more questions,
Lizzie (BSc Mathematics and Philosophy - University of Sheffield)

I’m starting my MSc at York this year, my undergrad was a mixed experience but still very enjoyable. Happy to answer questions.

Hiya, I've just finished at the Uni of Sheff as a mature student and whilst my undergrad experience was definitely mixed, I'd say it depends on each person. In terms of my course, I was worried, but there were lots of mature students (parents, those changing career etc.) and it was comforting for me to know that I wasn't the only mature student. I also received emails every month or so about the mature students committee and any socials they had planned, I didn't attend any of these due to other commitments, but it seems like they run regular events throughout the year.

What will you be studying? And will you be living in postgrad accommodation on campus? And how old were you when you did your undergrad? If over 21, did you find the social aspect ok? Sorry for all the questions 😅

I studied Education, I started at 21 and was unsure about halls/commuting etc. to begin with, but lived in uni halls for 1st year, private halls for 2nd year and then commuted in my 3rd year 🙂
