Hoping to do Chemistry at Uni

Hi there, I am a Year 12 A Level student studying Chemistry, Geography and English Literature A level and I’m predicted A*AB for my summer exams. I’m interested in studying Chemistry at university (especially the chemistry and the atmosphere course) and I’m considering Bristol, Warwick, York . However, the entry requirements say geology and environmental science along with Chemistry. Does anyone know if I can still get in with my a level choices? Geology and environmental science is the only thing close to Geography.

What do the entry requirements actually say? Can you provide a link? I would be very surprised if it actually required such an uncommon A-level subject.

Bristol requires AAA including chemistry. You may be made an offer with A*AB although it will likely be for the standard requirement of AAA so you could need to be working to get an A in the last subject.

Warwick requires AAB including chemistry and one of maths, FM, physics, biology, geology, statistics or computer science. You do not meet the requirements for Warwick as you don't have a second STEM subject, and they have not listed geography as acceptable. I would not advise applying unless you have contacted them and they have said they will accept geography as equivalent to geology in their requirements (I suspect they won't but no harm in asking if you haven't already).

York requires one of the following:

AAB including A in chemistry plus two other sciences/mathematics
AAA including A in chemistry plus one other science/mathematics
A*AA including A in chemistry

They consider the following to meet their "sciences/mathematics" requirement: biology, electronics, environmental science, geology, mathematics, further mathematics, computer science and physics.

As such you would only be eligible for the A*AA offer unless they actually accept geography (which as per Warwick, I think is unlikely they would have overlooked this but no harm in asking). As with Bristol you may be made an offer but it would likely be the standard offer and so require you to get an A in whatever subject you're currently predicted a B in, when you take the actual exam.

If you're interested in chemistry and/or the environment, you may also want to consider Southampton (you would meet the requirements for the lowered offer of ABB as they accept geography as being a second "science" subject) which has a strong chemistry department and also a very strong earth/environmental sciences department you may be able to take some optional modules in (and they have a number of environmental chemistry specific options in chemistry besides).

These are all for the BSc courses at each uni. The MChem/MSci courses will likely be one or two grades higher with the same subject requirements.

Hi,

I'm a third-year chemistry student at Lancaster University. Just wanted to pop in and say that during my first year at university I did environmental science as a minor subject. It accounted for a third of my credits in that year, so looking at doing a subject with a minor that you are interested could be an option.

Alternatively if you are interested in chemistry with other subjects, you could potentially look at natural sciences. This is where you can study more than one science subject at once and it can include chemistry, geography, biology and many other subjects. The course may also have different entry requirements that better suit your A-level choices.

Hi Charlotte,

It's great to hear that you're interested in studying at York!

For our Chemistry courses we usually offer:

AAB including A in Chemistry plus two other sciences/mathematics

AAA including A in Chemistry plus one other science/mathematics

A*AA including A in Chemistry

We accept the following science/mathematics subjects: Biology, Electronics, Environmental Science, Geology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.

So, for you to meet the requirements of an offer for Chemistry from us you'd need to get:

A in Chemistry

A in Geography / English literature

A* in Geography or English Literature

I'd expect that with a prediction of A*AB that you'd be likely to get an offer, but if you'd like a more concrete answer I'd recommend contacting our Chemistry admissions team:

I hope this helps - Hannah 🙂

hi, I’m doing chemistry at Warwick this september and did geography and chemistry at a level but bath also accepts geography as a science! if you’re interested in sustainability nottingham is really big on that (did my sutton trust summer school there and they have really good labs imo) and i think they dont have any specific entry requirements other than chem (AAB-ABB). Are you eligible for contextuals? that might help with getting offers

Hey,

Thanks for the information!

Did Warwick accept Geography as a second subject alongside Chemistry?
