Work experience for psychology students

Hi, I am a first year pychology student in A.R.U uni, I was wondering how I can find relevant jobs both paid and unpaid in Cambridge and gain that clinical experience.
Please let me know.

Hi👋🏻

During my undergrad degree I was a support worker alongside to gain some clinical experience. I worked directly with adults struggling with mental health in a residential setting and worked alongside psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. For most, this counts as clinical experience. It isn’t the best direct clinical experience but it can set you up for more roles in the future such as an assistant psychologist or a psychological well-being practitioner. 📖

I also volunteered at a crisis helpline. This helps with experience of risk assessment and communication amongst different platforms. Again, this is entry level and helps gain experience to follow more rigorous routes. 😊

I hope this helps!😁

Hi !

My names Lily, and I’m a second year psychology student also at ARU in Cambridge.

So from personal experience I volunteer at a charity which provides feeling well courses. So people who are struggling can sign up to these and they can gain knowledge on how to prevent negative behaviours, and adapt their way of thinking. This is strictly remote work for me and very flexible. I have also been offered to go into hospitals and shadow people who are working with mentally ill patients, but feel like this is a bit much for me personally but might benefit yourself as you are looking for clinical experience.

In terms of looking for experience, definitely try and look for support from ARU. I set up a meeting with a careers advisor to discuss how to look for volunteering work and found this was really helpful. As well as this get in contact with your tutor and they should point you in the right direction.

I hope this helps, and if there’s any questions please feel free to ask.
