Is primary teaching that bad?

Hey there, I'm currently a year 13 student who has applied to Sheffield Hallam to study Primary Education (5-11) with QTS. But ever since I applied for my place there, I've had lots of negative comments from people when I've told them that I have applied to be a teacher. I come from a family that has many primary and secondary teachers, and they've all warned me about the realities of such a job, including: underpayment, long working hours, taking on more responsibilities than the job role entails etc... I also have family members who have quit the profession due to the stressful realities, and as someone who has applied for this course for 2024 it has made me question my decision. Similarly, my college teachers have questioned me whether it is the right profession for me. I've always loved the idea of teaching, but hasn't been something that I've been completely set on, even more now after applying. I understand that the education system is completely underfunded and modern society is making a job in primary teaching becoming increasingly harder. I would really appreciate to hear from student teachers/ anyone that can advise me what to do in this situation. Thank you!

I'm a Secondary school teacher and a Governor in a Primary school. Yes schools are busy places but my impression is that primaries are less stressful - yes, you have more subjects to cover but one class so you get to know them well. Most primary classes also have a TA which I rarely have at Secondary.

Depends on the school you choose to work.
I've worked in a few nice schools but my University placements both were schools that were horrible to do placement at!!

It is a brilliant profession. If you go in eyes wide open it is there for the taking. I don't think it is under paid. The average pay in most schools is around £40k meaning half get paid more and half less. Given you only work 2/3 of the year, I think that is a good deal. Similarly if money is your thing there is a lucrative ladder to climb.

Is it hard work? Yes. Would I recommend young people go into teaching after uni? Absolutely not. I would say go out into the real world, get some experience. Get a work ethic. Discover what life is like and is about and then go into teaching. I can't help but wonder what someone who went to school, went to university and then went back to school has to offer because the world of education is about as far divorced from reality as it is possible to get.

Good luck!

Assignments are ok but you can't control the placement and mentor they can literally make your life a living hell and fail you….. Even when your working hard and meeting targets!!!
