I don't understand the A level Physics content

I've been getting D's and E's all of first year and I feel like I'm going to get a U on my end of year assessment at this rate. I've realised that the issue is that I'm just not understanding any of the content and I don't know what to do. I've gone through my notes and tried using flashcards but they might as well have been written in spanish because I just feel like I'm memorising words and not actually understanding what's going on. I've also done a few past papers and I've gotten D's on mechanics and U's on the electrons, waves and photons papers. I'm doing OCR A btw.

Ask your physics teacher for help, ask questions in class whenever you don't understand anything. the more you delay this, the harder it will get. Ask your queries on those topics and talk to them about this content

I've already tried that but my teacher's explanations aren't making any sense. I also tried a private tutor and he was even worse.

I was in the same boat as you. If you don't understand content, use ZPhysics on youtube. He follows the spec for OCR and he covers everything really well. Then once you watch his videos, try topic notes on pmt. You should be ok In'sha'Allah

Okay I'll give that a go. What grades are you getting now if you don't mind me asking?

Consider a tutor? Having one-on-one help is often far more useful than a class setting. Also as Flyingbunny.80 said, PMT notes are great as questions are provided for each topic which you can attempt after consolidating knowledge. Do plenty of past papers and make sure to mark thoroughly. OCR has a tendency to follow a similar mark scheme on quite a few questions (potential dividers, photoelectric effect, etc...) so understanding how they are marked is vital. If that doesn't work then there are plenty of amazing youtubers like ZPhysics who have fantastic videos to help.

I've actually already done my A-levels (2023) but I had to retake Physics because I was lost in year 13 and my teacher was absolutely useless. I didn't know about Zphysics so I didn't understand topics but long story short I got an E. I retook and in that summer before I retook, I found ZPhysics and used his videos to cover all year 12 content. It worked wonders for me. I did the same during my retake year and came out with a B. Also during year 13, I found going through past papers really hard bc the markschemes can be so vague so I used to watch past paper walkthroughs on youtube. I'd really recommend that because it shows u how a question should be broken down and then answered. Good luck with Physics, it can be hard ik but it's also really interesting once u start to understand it.

I’ve started watching the Zphysics YouTube videos and they’ve been really helpful. I’ll give the past paper walkthrough a go. I’ve got my EOY assessment next week so hopefully I can scrap something together by then

Uplearn helps me bc it's structured content and teaches it in an easy way but it's not free so i guess you could get something similar with khan academy or youtube

Hope your assessment went wel!!
Do you have any tips or resources that i could use cause i can't seem to find anything useful both on here and online? Were those youtube videos any help?

Hi, I haven't been on this account in months so sorry for replying late.

There's loads of advice I have for you now that I've survived my A levels.

So in terms of youtube videos I mainly used zphysics and science shorts but physics online may also be worth taking a look at.

In terms of practice I'd say do PMT questions and when you reach the run up to exams you will want to do loads of AS and A level past papers. Flashcards are also good for those definitions and standard answers you'll need to learn especially for astrophysics and cosmology along with medical physics or whatever that last chapter was called.

If anything else comes to mind I'll let you know and I have some of my physics notes left that I didn't throw away so let me know if you want them.

Hi, thank you for getting back to me!
Hope your a-levels went well!

I appreciate the tips, will defo apply it to how i go forward. PMT has been a great help so far, and i will check out the youtube videos you mentioned.

I'd love to see your notes i think it would be really helpful. How would you be able to send them over?
