Manchester or Southampton?

I know UCAS deadlines are due in less than 3 days but I still haven’t managed to decide whether I should go Manchester or Southampton.

- Manchester (Mech Eng MEng) A*A*A
- Southampton (Mech Eng MEng) A*AA

I haven’t visited Manchester yet but I have been really great with setting in areas that I haven’t been to before but I have been to University if Southampton and the area wasn’t as social as london.

I have considered what my priorities are but both Universities still ended up in a tie. Manchester have a great night life, more sociable experiences and probably a good university atmosphere all-in-all and is really prestige. However, Southampton’s module for Mech Eng seem to be better as they reflect off of modern technologies which is better for the course. The city is peaceful and quiet which is nice but can be boring over time.

Any insights would help but I am currently leaning towards Southampton.

But also, the risk of getting into Manchester is higher as I am currently sitting in a high A for Further Maths and can achieve A* but failure ti do so will leave me going to my insurance.

If you go to Soton for engineering at Master level, be ready to just struggle. As a student in this faculty you will become just a number. Some lecturers seem to not care about their students and rarely answer questions. They just care about their own research. I've even been refused help during a tutorial class. Lectures are just slides bombarding you with information and too few working examples. You'll spend most of your time late at night trying to learn the material from Youtube or books, same thing when it comes to learning how to use engineering software. The fail rate has also increased a lot ever since they changed the regulations 2 years ago, which halved compensated credits, and the exams are now harder than they were before covid.
If you have any issues, all you can do as a student is fill-in an online form and cross fingers, which often times will lead to nothing.
Sorry for the rant but I thought I should share my bad experience. I went to a smaller, non-Russel group uni for my BEng and had a much better, more "human" experience.

This post is crazy to me because I made the same decision! I picked Southampton btw because the cost of living is sooo high for Manchester, and I didn't think a wild city was for me. Southampton's got nicer surroundings and also the weather's actually way better in Southampton. I'm doing geog tho so maybe the course is different for you

Yes, Southampton is quite good as a city, I can't deny. Also close to London (less than 1h30 train ride). It's just the uni experience which has been a struggle for me and my other engineering classmates. However you are right by saying that I can't speak for the uni as a whole, just my experience in the engineering faculty.

Are you currently studying at Southampton? If so how have you found it as a uni?

Not anymore. For the academic experience I found it as described in my previous post. Otherwise, the campus itself is quite good in terms of infrastructure with the sports facilities, shops, cafes, etc. There are food stalls quite often too and some fun activities from time to time. The main campus is also right next to the Common which is nice. Also numerous societies, although I didn't get much time to take part in any of them considering my struggles 😂

Sorry to hear it wasn't a good expereince for you, hope things turned out alright. It sounds like a lovely place to live and study tho, ty for sharing
Hi @Abaxta!
It's awesome to hear that you are considering studying at Southampton, It is a lovely city and really great uni - but I am biassed! 😀

I am an engineering masters student, and I am really enjoying my studies here. As you get further into your degree there is a lot of opportunity to tailor your modules to the specific topics you are interested in. The course is also includes quite a few design project, so you get to get really stuck in and involved in different aspects within the field of mechanical engineering. The facilities are also really up to date and have some really cool bits of equiptment that you get to work with.

In terms of Southampton as a city, I think its quite a nice mix between the hussle and bussle of city living and nature. Portwood is one of the most student heavy areas in southampton and there is quite a few pubs and clubs there. There is also a fair amount of things going on in the city centre at night in terms of pubs and clubs as well as other entertainment. Southampton common is right next to Highfield campus and its really lovely and green and it really doesn't feel like you're in a city!

It is obviously down to personal preference and the aspects that you feel are the most important for you. So if you have any questions or want any advice feel free to ask on here!
