Sheffield Hallam - Mental Health Nursing BSC

Hi, I’m due to start Mental Health Nursing at Sheffield Hallam in Sept 2024. I’m wondering if any previous/ current students could comment on what their timetable looked like in the first year? (how many days a week were you timetabled to be at uni, start and finish times etc) just to get a general idea of what it may look like for me. Also, if anyone could comment on what placement looks like for mental health students?

Heyy, I can’t talk about the timetable much because I’m also doing MHN this September!

However, I can tell you a bit about the placements.

Right, so you’d be working typical shifts, across sites (community to clinical settings) each semester (every 2 months) after semester 2. This is how it was with some of the students I’ve met, but I’m not sure if it’s different in different uni’s.

Typical day starts at 7am and ends at 7pm. You’ll have a book that needs to be signed by the lead nurse/ supervisor. You are advised to send an email to your placement manager/ supervisor before starting your placement.

You may get a minimum of 2 breaks and it’s up to you to fit that in, in a way that works for you.

I’d give more details, but I feel like it might take away from the experience and it can be fun once you get used to it.

The advice I was given was to always be open to giving things a go, even if you’re not sure how to do it (ask for help) and to always ask questions as it shows you’re interested.

I’d recommend watching YouTube videos of ppl talking about their experience. It’ll give you an idea of what it could be like.

Also, carry pens… preferably more than one cuz they always go missing 😂. A bottle of water too. Talk with the patients, it can be a bit tough at first, but they’re people too and having new people always takes some getting used to.

Read the handover and you may have to do night shifts. Read up on the patients a little to get an idea about them, but the fastest way to learn would be to speak to HCA’s (health care assistants) because they’d be able to give you a summary/understanding of the patient’s in the ward (in my experience).

Also, after you’ve been there a while, all you’ll hear is Lorazepam 😭😭(that’s me rn)

What I do know about the timetable is that we’d finish the course later (if you look up the term dates for ur uni, it should come up) than others. For example, I’d finish the academic year in September… 🥲

Thankyou sm that acc really helps! Do you know if the placements are in general healthcare or actual mental health placements?

No problem!

From my understanding, it’s different for each uni. A student I know did her placement in a Learning Disabilities setting as well as a Mental Health setting and, for example, Southampton University focuses mainly on Mental Health settings.

Hi, I’m also starting Sheffield Hallam this September for mental health nursing! How you feeling? If you google Sheffield Hallam nursing timetable it shows you how the academic year is broken down into uni, placements, holidays etc for the next 3 years. I also asked about how many days in uni etc and they said it’s normally 3 days in uni but couldn’t be anymore specific than that x

Same as you, both anxious and excited. I’m a mature student so I’m travelling into uni. The thought of that worries me and despite the fact I’m almost 39, getting lost also stresses me out 😂 did you manage to find the timetable I was talking about? I’m not sure it will be all day for those 3 days but I know when we have virtual placement it’s Monday-Friday for 4 weeks I think x

I feel exactly the same, I wish they could just tell me everything now so I can be prepared. I’m also quitting my job to do this and I have 4 children. I can’t actually wait to leave work though! I’ve already told them so they’re aware and I finish a few weeks before we start uni as well. I am mostly excited to get started……I think 😂

Hello there, I would recommend you to speak to the course leader as they will be able to give you a estimate of the course timetables ([email protected] - 0114 225 2372), you will only get your official timetables once you enrol onto the course. Please also check out the chat service to the current students studying at Sheffield Hallam University (Chat to students | Sheffield Hallam University (shu.ac.uk)), they may be able to give you advice/support about the course, placements or student life! I hope you find this useful!

Hi Thankyou! I’m pretty clear on the key dates of terms etc I think, just wanted a rough estimate of days during the week and rough times really. Unfortunately the student chat doesn’t have anyone who’s been on/is on mental health nursing x

A bit late to the thread, but its so good to see I'm not the only one leaving full time job to go to uni for this! I'm also a mature student (38) and travelling in. Can't wait to finish work ... ive got a spreadsheet counting down my working days!

You apply for the shu card when you enrol and we don’t get the timetables until 16th September. Have you got the course schedule for welcome week?

When you enrolled you should have received an email saying congratulations you’ve enrolled. It’s on that email highlighted in blue you can just press it and it’s a link x

If only I could just send you a screenshot 😂

Ohhh I think it’s because I’m on “conditional enrolment” because of a mess up on their side! The stress 🫠

Reply 19

Ohhhh maybe. That’s frustrating! As if it’s not stressful enough. Really thought we were going to get timetables once we’d enrolled, can’t believe we’ve got to wait till the 16th 🤦🏻*♀️
