hi! im going to study astrophysics at manchester (hopefully) in september and ive been there twice for interviews and things so hopefully i can help a bit. The uni itself is really well known for being a strong historical character at the forefront of STEM fields like chem and phys, but they are also really prominent in humanities across the board like law and english and criminology. The city is in top 5 biggest (depending on how you count it could be 2nd in UK) so it could be daunting coming from a more low-key environment. For me im moving from outskirts of a big city to the centre of a massive city, which makes me slightly anxious but im also really excited. Just the small portion that i travelled through (mostly near the uni) there was every type of shop and restaurant and activity and hangout place you could think of sprawled around everywhere you looked. Busy shopping centres, lowkey coffee shops, hidden skateparks and football pitches under overpasses, shipping container cocktail bars, open air clothes markets under bridges and restaurants by the canal etc. It was really urban and modern and at the same time very local and cute in a way, it really had everything, which is something im looking forward to a lot. The uni itself is made of the old sandy coloured 1800s building where the original science stuff was done (Rutherford, Dalton, Chadwich, Bohr, Cox, Erdos etc). these parts are really amazing to look at and theres lots of social spaces surrounded by the historical buildings. I think Crim would be mostly in the more modern buildings that surround the old campus. The atmosphere is busy and bustling as well as petite and calm so again it offers everything all at once. I went 2 seperate times and both times i couldnt say much wrong with anything, so thats why its my firm. Hope to see you there
