Complaining about uni course

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of complaining to the university about your course? If so how does this work, and what sort of response/compensation do you receive?

My course has been suspended by my university, and they have removed all possibility of optional units. Despite advertising that this was a key part of the course, members of staff are now denying that optional units were ever available?!
Among other things, assignment grades are never returned on time too.

Is this something worth raising with the uni? Myself and others on my course feel like we have been miss sold a service by them.

Thanks!!

Hi.

I am so sorry to hear that this has been your experience at university.

The first thing that came to mind was talking to your university student union. At my university they are there to support us with such matters, and they are brilliant. I can't speak for all universities, but the whole point of having an SU is to support the students. They are seperate from the university. So, I think it would definitely be worth giving them a go if you haven't already.

I wish you all the best.

Complaints should, in the first instance, be raised through the staff/student committee where they are minuted and actioned. However, this may not be appropriate given that the university has taken the decision to suspend the programme and not offer any optional modules. I have worked on programmes that are being phased out and it is a sad state of affairs for all concerned. We are going to see more and more of this in the sector. As long as the university has followed the proper procedures in doing so, you may struggle to build a case, but as it has be suggested, the SU may be able to advise.

Regarding optional modules, there is probably some small print somewhere that says that optional modules may not run every year and what's on offer may change for year to year. Tha's certainly the case where I work.

Hello,

I am so sorry to hear this is happening to you! It sounds so unsettling and unfair.

I would recommend contacting your personal tutor initially, as well as the staff/student liaison committee (if you have one for your school of study). They should be able to support you and your studies, as well as sort out issues with your course. It may be beneficial to band together with some of your course mates to do this as well. Potentially if this does not work, it may help to contact your education advisor in the SU, your head of school or your universities head of academic study.

Hope this helps!
