I need help

if i get a 7 in maths and and 8 in english literature, should i retake them to get a 9? I had a really bad migraine during these exams which literally made my vision so blurry and affected my performance greatley. If i do retake and get a 9 i would have 999999988777 approx and i really want to study dentistry at KCL so the more 9s the better

Hi, fellow GCSE student here
I would say that having effected vision would be a fairly good reason to make an appeal, however both 7s and 8s are amazing grades and top unis like KCL will mainly look at your A-levels and personal statement. They most likely will look at your GCSEs as a whole along side the other parts of your application but they don’t play too big a role in your acceptance. Your grades no matter what sound like they will be amazing and top unis tend to want around six or seven 8s and 9s (combined) which you are getting even if you don’t appeal. Therefore, I’d say don’t retake the exams and you never know, you might find you got the 9s in them anyway.
Hi, thank you for your reply, I hope your exams are going well. But I believe KCL weights GCSEs in the total application by 40% so GCSEs unfortunately are very crucial. Funding for retaking the exam or revising for the exam is not an issue for me. So I am still considering taking the resits but will universities consider my retake grade over my previous grade?
And by appeal do you mean special consideration? Or are they two different things?

Having had a quick look at KCL’s website, it appears that they will accept resit grades. Having said that, they also seem to want grades 6+ anyway for a lot of courses, so you might not have to worry about doing the resits if things pan out as you suggest.

When would you be thinking of re-sitting them? You’d have to take into account the possible impact on your A levels in terms of how much time you intend to devote to them.

No problem, so sorry I didn’t realise that they were such a large percentage for KCL. Universities should take your reset grade, I would presume that they wouldn’t have access to your original grade? Appeals are just the request to get your paper remarked/ resat I’m pretty certain.

I was thinking of resitting maths this November and then English Literature next summer because I don't think for AQA you can resit literature in Autumn. Basically as soon as possible. But I don't intend to revise heavily for these exams as I was predicted a 9 in both and only performed poorly due to a medical issue.

Might as well then, for your own peace of mind. Otherwise you’ll always regret it in later years, for personal reasons. You can take my word for that😉

Truth be told, your best bet is to phone some uni’s and ask them. I’m aware that in the past some uni’s only accepted your initial grades and not the resit results. But no idea where things are up to nowadays.

Sorry I can’t be of more help. But good luck with it all.
