I have firmed Newcastle university to start this September. Does anyone have any advice on the city, accommodation, making friends. Newcastle in general.
Newcastle is quite far from home for me, and I’m having second doubts on if I should go that far, I feel like I might panic and want to go to a uni in my home city instead. Would I be able to do this through clearing? I had received an offer from the uni closer to me but it was AAA which I am capable so I didn’t think I’d manage to get an A in the real a levels due to the amount of pressure and stress I’d put myself under and I also preferred Newcastle’s course over that one. Not sure if I should just stick it out and go new castle or stay close to home

Hi I’ve firmed Newcastle as well I’ve applied with partners. I think it’s one of the easiest cities to get around it’s not too big and there are loads of cheap places to get food and there’s a higher % of students since there are two unis in the city. I think you’d be completely fine 😊

Hi, I'm from Newcastle and will be staying for uni and moving into accommodation, its a great city you will love it such a nice place, I recommend Park View for accommodation if you can get it, its quite competitive, also Marris House is quite good. What course are you doing?

I couldn’t get advanced booking for park view as it never seemed to be available. Not sure why. But I did the preferences option instead. I’m doing computer science . Wbu?

Hi,
I am also looking for Newcastle accommodation. I have waited nearly a month for Park view in advanced booking but no luck yet so I think I am thinking of going for the 2nd option now. Which 3 options would you say are the best? Park view would be 1st. what about 2nd and 3rd? please advise.

I did Newgate court as another one as it looked nice on the photos and seemed to be relatively close . However I only looked at Park view on the open day

I forgot about advanced booking so I did the same. Went for Park view, then Park terrace and Kensington terrace. I definitely want an en suite and looking at the photos, those two seemed the nicest. Bit unclear how many rooms have been redone of park terrace, but I found the potential number of roommates at Kensington more of a drawback so I put that second. I wanted to stick to uni owned accommodation and not be too far from the gym as well x

Hi!

First of all congratulations for the offer at Newcastle University, I hope all your exams went well!

Newcastle really is a great city, it has a huge student feel with 1 in 6 people living in the city during term time being a student. It is definitely lively both day and night, there is always something to do, from art galleries to petting zoos to museums and plenty of green space. As well as this, you can get away to the coast in a short 20 minute metro-ride or out to the countryside (Northumberland) within a 30 minute drive. Durham, Edinburgh and York are all direct train journeys away with Durham only being 10 minutes, perfect for day trips.

In terms of making friends there is loads on offer to help. First of all you have your flat, accommodations are shared between 4-8 first year students. Then, there is your course where you are encouraged to meet in freshers week through social activities and your peer mentor group. Then, there are societies and sports clubs that you will learn all about in your first week however, I really recommend trying out as many as possible! Here, you will make friends with those with similar interests, this is encouraged through regular socials, training sessions (for sport) and weekend activities.

With the distance, I understand it is a scary time moving far from home. One thing that helped myself and lots of other students is realising that most people are in the same boat, a huge number of students here are from across the UK, some even across the world. Another thing, there are lots of holidays with university, it is only natural to miss home however this was made easier with the 1 month Christmas holiday, 1 month Easter and 3 months summer! It is also easy to go home around university and studying as your days are a lot more flexible then school with less contact hours. If you do find yourself preferring to stay close to home, you can absolutely go through clearing there if your course is available, you can ring up on results day after you get your results and see what they can offer you. You would just have to first reject your place from Newcastle.

I hope this information has helped you and any more questions please do get back in touch!

Thank you,
Eve - Outreach Ambassador for Newcastle University
