Bristol or Edinburgh?

Speaking about social sciences (economics, political science, IR). I guess that Edinburgh is better but difference is slight.

STEM student here but I was in a similar position deciding which of the two to put down after I received offers. Aside from combing through the course content I would really recommend going to the open days if you haven’t already, just walking around campus and getting a feel for the atmosphere told me everything I needed to know.

Speaking as someone who just left Bristol to go to Edinburgh for a Masters, Edinburgh is definitely higher tier

I didn't expect the difference to be significant. Personally, I perceive that they are both from the highest tier in the UK. So, according to QS, Edinburgh is ranked 27th and Bristol is 54th. According to THE, Edinburgh is ranked 30th and Bristol is 81st. Based on these data, I cannot say that the difference is serious enough. At the same time, theoretically, Bristol may be better in some subjects (for example, in mine). Am I wrong?

I think it does depend on the course, when it comes to STEM Edinburgh is unmatched, and it is also very prestigious as a university, it would attract more eyes on a CV. Also I don't know about you but I would say 30 ranks above is quite a difference. That being said Bristol is more of a party city if you're into that 🙂 And the weather is better. You seem to have made your mind already to be fair with this one!

Yeah, I made my decision. I will go to Bristol. Because I waited a very long time for a response from Edinburgh (they extended deadline by 2,5+ months) and finally gave up. Maybe now I wanna justify my choice and think that Bristol is no worse. It's not completely honest. I realize that Edinburgh is more prestigious and famous worldwide.
Speaking of Bristol, absolutely everyone notes that it is a really party city. That will be interesting to see.

I get that, I waited 3 months extra to get my offer from Edinburgh too, they like playing with us! Bristol is still a good university. I'll give you some advice to prepare, rent has skyrocketed since all Londoners decided to move here, before I left I was paying 1.5k with bills earlier this year. It's literally London prices. Avoid Bedminster area (North Bedminster right by the river is fine), full of crackheads and aggressive homeless. People will tell you to avoid Easton but it's safe unless you are black or sell drugs (they do catcall if you're a woman though, but harmless). Never take cigarettes offered by homeless-looking people, it's 95% of the time crack. Can't think of anything else right now, let me know if you have questions though

Thank you very much! It's really interesting and useful. Perhaps you know something about the accommodation? It's just that yesterday I confirmed my accommodation. As I understand it, you did not live in the residences of the university, but you may have heard something. So, I was allocated a Culver House.

That's great, that's in Clifton. Posh area, you'll be next to a big library too. Lucky

Did you enjoy your uni life at Bristol? It gets a lot of stick for being uppity and elitist. I went to the open day and loved it but there are literally 2 things holding me back: elitist culture? Not much representation from black community which is important as I am mixed race and want to feel comfortable. What was your experience of student life there? Are people friendly? Is the whole rich/posh kid divide a myth? Diversity? Are there some rnb nights? I know theres a lot of other music styles but would love some rnb student nights too. Thank you!

Diversity is not really important for me. In general, I did not face a lot of black people. The majority of my groupmates is Chinese. I can't say that people are very arrogant or on the contrary friendly. They are neutral like everywhere.

I know this is an old post but I work in London, Bristol and Edinburgh domestically have a similair prestige only internationally I'd say theres a significant difference. Bristol is also prestigious and this level of glaze for edinburgh is unjustified. Edinburgh is hardly UCL/LSE etc. Bristol is better for engineering and for careers in law, and finance theyre about equal

I dont think Edinburgh is a tier above at all
