Speech and Language Therapy

Hi I was thinking about applying for SLT In September and was wondering if anyone has any personal statement tips and what work experience is good to have? Also I'm doing A level politics, A level law and Btec sport and was wondering if these subjects will be okay to apply with to university's like Manchester and MMU.

im an offer holder for both MMU and uni of Manchester for SLT. it all depends on your (predicted) grades I would say. in my personal statement I explained wider research I had done into the profession (linking this to the specification of my A-Levels (bio, psych, Philosophy) and also included my relevant work experience, my aspiration, personal factors that contributed to me wanting to do the course and of course extra and co-curriculars and hobbies! if it is of any help I can send mine to you if you'd like?

Hi,
I applied for SLT this year and received an offer from Greenwich. My best advice for your personal statement is to try to gain as much experience as you can during the summer holidays. For example, consider working with children at a school or adults in a care home. Additionally, you could email hospitals and clinics in your area to ask for shadowing experience with a speech and language therapist. This will give you an overview of their day-to-day life, which you can discuss in your personal statement.
I am currently working part-time as a teaching assistant for an art workshop where we help children with language and behavioral difficulties. You might want to look for volunteering opportunities related to that as well.
Also, I completed a free course with a speech and language therapy organization, which I will link below. The course provides a certificate upon completion and offers a brief overview of various diagnoses and treatments that a speech and language therapist uses. Some of this content will be covered at university.
I believe most universities offering SLT accept any A-levels, with Newcastle being the only one that requires a science A-level. Regardless of the university, for all SLT courses, you will need to complete an interview before you get an offer, so don't forget to prepare for that as well.
Let me know if you need any additional help.

Also for the interview, this website was really helpful - https://www.studential.com/university/applying/UCAS-application-guide/interviews/speech-and-language-therapy-questions

I talked about documentaries that I watched in my personal statement and linked them to SLT. They were called The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (I think this one is also a book) and My Beautiful Broken Brain

Hey! I applied and got an offer to study Speech and Language Therapy at Birmingham City University.

In my personal statement, I talked about past work experience. I’ve been working as a teaching assistant for six years and got to work alongside a speech and language therapist and deliver interventions to the pupils. I also made a small reference to my reasons for choosing speech and language therapy and what led me to want to choose it.

I also secured some work experience observing speech and language therapists which I added in there. On top of that I read “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by Jean Dominique Bauby and “Birth to Five Years” By Mary Sheridan. I made reference to these and what I’d learnt from them.

On top of that I linked in the NHS values and a brief summary of my hobbies. I used this as a way to explain how it helps me to maintain a healthy mental wellbeing. Lastly I touched on some of my career plans upon successfully completing the degree.

I’d check with the university you’re applying to and see if your A-levels are okay and if they require you to have some sort of experience.

For podcasts on Spotify I really recommend these:

RCSLT

SLTea Time

SALTSOC

These websites helped me to learn more about speech therapy:

RCSLT (royal college of speech and language therapy)

RADLD (raising awareness of developmental language delay)

Speech and language uk

They’re also on Instagram.

Good luck with the application process! ☺️

I am a current MSc SALT student, if you can't get hospital/ SLT Assistant experience, I would recommend volunteering with a relevant charity such as the Stroke Association or Aphasia Support. I did this, I volunteer with the Stroke Association undertaking 1 x 30 min call a week with a stroke survivor and a) it's really lovely to chat with someone who may be going through a difficult time, b) you are provided with knowledge and training related to the specific area (eg - stroke) and c) it looks really good on your application and/or in any interviews - I believe it really helped me with securing my place on the course. Best of luck with your application!
