DofE silver - food

Hello everyone,
I wasn't really sure which forum to put this in but it's about dofe silver.
Any advice on a food plan for this? My team and I need to make breakfast, lunch, dinner and another breakfast and lunch.

I did my dofe bronze last year and we made pancakes for breakfast and pasta for dinner, they were quite good but needed a lot of work to clean up after. (Also we weren't allowed to get rid of the pasta water so we had to drink it...). We didn't really bother with lunch.

Any advice for this would be greatly appreciated as I'm sure dofe silver needs some more preparation!

best advice is to have cold/very simple breakfasts and definitely cold lunches. silver is only a few days so sandwiches will keep; i used brioche bread since it can be squished at the bottom of the bag without getting too ruined. for dinner boil in the bag is a must, or bags of pasta/ rice. other than that just take as many sugary snacks as possible to have during the day, like boiled sweets; energy bars; flapjacks; billtong and m&ms (they don’t melt) for some ideas. (kendall mint cake is also great but very high in sugar)

this is so random lol but my group LOVED uncle Ben's rice + canned meatballs. Now listen I know it sounds disgusting, but after a long treacherous day, to have that nice, warm (lowkey delicious), filling meal made it kinda worth it.

We also did brioche for brekkie. Lunch was usually just junk like sweets or cereal bars cuz we wanted to get the walk done as quick as possible. Then dinner the rice or pasta.

Hi,
I’m actually about to go on Gold qualifying expedition next week!

My menu plan is similar to what i did on practice expedition:

Breakfast:
. Porridge (e.g instant porridge pots). You can maybe add some dried berries or raisins to these.
. Maybe some tea satchets or hot chocolate!

Lunch:
. Bagels I find are really good, also brioche buns.
. These pancakes which contain chocolate in and are ready to eat. Sainsbury’s supermarket sell them and maybe Amazon does too.

Snacks:
. Raisin packets!
. Dried fruit and nuts!
. Belvita bars (can also work as breakfast or lunch)

Dinner:
Dehydrated/boil in the bag options:
. Wayfarers (highly recommend Chilli and Rice)
. Firepot dehydrated (take about 15 mins to rehydrate, but they do taste good)

Cooking options:
. Pasta. Bring ready made pasta you can just heat up and add sauce in. Bring sauce in satchets and double seal in zip lock bags, some people in my group did have the ocassional unfortunate leakage because their sauce was not in sealed containers.
. Ramen noodles. Make sure to add some protein e.g dried meat, stock, etc.

We were doing the hike at a national park so we couldn't even throw away the pasta water... everything had to go into our bags or into our mouths

Thanks for the ideas! The instant porridge seems like a good idea. What do you think about tortilla crepes or a burrito wrap, they seem pretty easy to make and clean up later.

Also do you have any advice on cheese? I assume it has to be refrigerated but we obviously can't bring a whole fridge with us and ice packs won't last for more than a day. it was for this reason that we missed out on the cheese for my bronze expedition.

Thanks so much! 😀

Yeah burrrito wraps are good but can be a little bulky! Try to take a small packet each day!

For cheese try small packets like Cheestrings, Babybel, etc. refrigerate them up to the day of the expedition and keep in sealed bags and original packets. You are going on a shorter expedition so it should be alright

yes 100% recommend hot chocolate!!!

a lot of people will sleep quite badly so I have fond memories of us all being up at 4am in a circle drinking hot chocolate together
