Alternatives to dissertation- good idea?

My university offers a couple of alternatives to the dissertation, and as a languages student, a module entitled 'extended translation final year project' is one of them. It's similar to the dissertation in that you have to research and write something very long except it would be on the topic of something translation-related e.g. translation of humour (60% of module grade) + translate something to put into practice what you researched/wrote about (40% of module grade). This sounds good to me as I've always been more interested in the language side of my course rather than culture and was dreading the dissertation for this reason. However I was wondering if there would be some kind of impact later down the line of having done this instead of a dissertation, or is the dissertation just another module like any other and doesn't matter in the real world?

Personally, I would do what interests you and you are motivated to do. In any case, the dissertation alternatives as you describe are still quite dissertation like in that they involve picking a subject, reading around it, and doing some primary research and analysis.
