Sheffield accomodation

Hiya,

I have firmed Sheffield and I am now in the process of applying for accommodation. I will be studying engineering which means I will be mainly at The Diamond and Mappin from what I have seen. I was looking at city accommodation (specifically Allen Court) as it is the closest. However, after doing some research I came across a few posts that said it is a bit far from Ranmoor/Endcliffe, the student union and other facilities and I would like to be involved in like going out and events. I have also read that city accom is poorly maintained.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend an accom based on these things or just in general?

Hello!

I stayed in Endcliffe in my first year and actually lived with two engineering students, and they seemed very content with the distance between accommodation and Uni buildings. A majority of my lectures/seminars in first year were also in the Diamond, alongside other buildings in the area like Broad Lane and Mappin, and I also never felt like the commute to Uni every day was an inconvenience. That being said, every student is different and what is important for you is that you make a decision based on the factors you prioritise. For example, if having the shortest commute to Uni each day is your most important factor, then as you said City accommodation may be the best choice. Or if the social aspect of Ranmoor/Endcliffe is something you'd like to prioritise, that may influence your decision also. Regardless of what you choose, it is very easy to get between the three sites as there are bus routes that go from Ranmoor/Endcliffe into the city.

Have you had a chance to come and visit the accommodation on an open day or a campus tour? It may help you make a decision if you see them in person. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away.

I am French and I will study 1 year in Sheffield from September. What advice would you give me for mobile phone and internet plans? Should I take 1 on the spot? With which operator? Thank you

You can choose any operator, as they all have good signal coverage in Sheffield. I would recommend SMARTY, as it's better value than the other operators and doesn't tie you into a contract (or charge lots for PAYG).

You can pick up a SIM card in most supermarkets or corner shops, or you can have it delivered to your address in Sheffield free of charge.

I'd recommend the 120GB plan for £12 per month, as this is more than enough for most people with a phone.

If this is too expensive and you know you won't use that much data, then the £5 plan for 5GB is also good (but worse value).
