My little sad PhD studentship story

I was awarded the SWW DTP for 2024 entry but I will have to decline it because I found out that the University of Exeter wouldn't cover for the difference between home and international fee (I honestly didn't know. I don't even remember reading it on the website and now their SWW DTP page is no longer available). I can't even work to meet these expenses due to the work restrictions of both the university and the studentship. Probably the universe is telling me that PhD isn't for me. This is just a rant, sorry.

If I may ask, how did you find out your University isn’t going to fund the difference? Did you write them?

Hi!
Yes, I did. Well, it wasn’t very straightforward.

Firstly, I emailed my proposed supervisor and she didn’t give me a direct answer (and she disappeared), instead she cc’ed the PGR Director of the Department. The PGR Director didn’t reply at all, so I contacted I don’t remember which office.

After a couple of days, since I didn’t receive any reply, I used the chat tool of the uni website and they confirmed that the difference wouldn’t be covered. However, no one has been able to send me any link where this policy is stated. They keep sending me the Funding search link but the page for the SWWDTP has been deleted. I still have the link but if I click on it it says “no information currently available” so I can’t even check if it was actually stated and I just simply misread. At least I would know it was my fault.

What does your award letter say? Normally the terms and conditions of every award are stated therein. Why don’t you also write the funding body. Utilise all avenues in order to gather more information on how to go about it before giving up since you haven’t got a definite answer on who is to fund the difference.

I still haven’t received a proper award letter. Just an email and I can accept until June 14th. If I accept, they will send me the letter.

I actually contacted the funding body but they can’t do much. They just advised to contact the University. Their guidelines say that international applicants would get their fees paid at the home rate (+ stipend) and that each University can decide what to do with the difference (most universities do actually waive it).

Probably the only thing left to do is to call the postgraduate admissions office to get to the bottom of it.

I think that would be best; calling the PG admissions office. Best of luck 🤞.
