Eligibility for Student Finance England

Hi,

I’m considering retraining options in the next year or so, and would need financial support to make it possible. However, I’m in a tricky spot because:

1) I have been living in Wales for the past five years (have otherwise lived in England for most of my life)
2) I will need to move away to uni since I would have to give up my rented flat (due to location and financial reasons)

My family are in England so I would stay with them between terms, and for the access course. But the eligibility criteria on the government website is vague, it says you need to “normally” live in England. What does that mean? Would I be entitled to SFE maintenance if I move back to England a year before starting my course?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Hanny, are you classing Wales as home outwith your term dates? You applied to the award authority that you class as 'home' and permanently live. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason, Wales would not be my home outside term dates as I would be permanently moving out of my current residence in Wales and moving to England. My question is whether not having lived in England for the last three consecutive years would affect my eligibility?

Hi Hanny,

What was the reason for moving to Wales? Was it due to employment?

Thanks,
Ross

Yes, for employment. I originally moved to Chester for employment but had to find alternative accommodation after being served a Section 21 notice, which is over the Welsh border.

Thanks for confirming.

Were the employment contracts temporary?

Thanks, Ross

Permanent. But I am now facing redundancy and expect to be unemployed in the next three months.

Thanks. So if you're living permanently in England (and classing this as home) on the first of September 2024 (or the 1st day of when your academic year begins), you apply to that award authority. Thanks, Jason

Thanks @SFE Jason. So my previous residency in Wales wouldn’t affect my eligibility as long as I set up permanent residency in England?

Hi Hanny,

That's correct.

Thanks, Ross
