What does Warwick look for in a maths application?

Hi, I'm in year 12 right now doing bio, chem, maths and further maths and I'm hoping to get predicted A*,A*,A,A (A*s in maths and fm). In GCSEs I got 7 grade 9s(including maths and level 2 fm) and 4 grade 8s. Do you think I have a chance of getting into warwick maths?
Also what else does warwick look for ie do they place much focus on the personal statement and references or is it just about the grades you get in A-Levels and in the admissions tests?
And do they care about extracurricular activities like Music grades at all?

Hi there!
I rarely see anything related to Warwick, let alone for Maths. I’m an offer holder for Maths at Warwick, hoping to work hard and get in, over the next few weeks. My GCSE grades were 4 9’s, 2 8’s, 2 7’s and a 6. I attended an open day.

On the open day, a man met me, who is the guy that deals with applications. He said you’re almost guaranteed an offer, given you have A*A*AA / A*A*A* predicted grades. They only look at the Personal Statement if you have a Gold in the Senior Maths Challenge and also if there were circumstances they’d have to consider (over-applied etc.). The hardest part is getting the A* in Further Maths, other than that, it’s a very straightforward process.

My best advice? Write an excellent personal statement as you’ll still need it for most other Universities. Next, work very hard to achieve the grades and don’t worry if they reply a little late, it’s not instant and they’ll notify you of any changes etc.

Good luck! I’m perfectly happy to help with any problems/questions you have.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your response, this has actually been so helpful for me!(as you mentioned it's really hard to find people on here talking maths at warwick)
I have a couple more questions if you don't mind me asking?
1) did you take any of the maths entrance exams or are you planning on taking step soon, if so when did you start preparing for them?
2) random, but do you have any maths book recommendations for me? I've listened podcasts and watched lots of youtube stuff but I haven't read many books yet

No worries! And, of course.

1.

I took the TMUA and MAT. Both of which I was in a bad position, my college didn’t push it that well and I usually ignore all the messages they send as 99% are irrelevant haha. I started preparing for STEP and it was going alright, I decided not to do it as my teachers advised it’s easier to get an A* in Further Maths than a Grade 2 in STEP 2 or 3. I’d recommend using the STEP Support programmes which are free and you can get ahead by starting them now which I’d advise very much for throughout the summer. I completed a few and they start alright, so you understand the contexts of questions and don’t make you feel terrible as you should be able to do some.

2.

Books! I assume you mean for the personal statement. I rarely read until my personal statement, which I like reading now if I can get myself into a book. I got Euclid's Pioneering Equation from my college library and read it in a few sittings. It’s an easy read and breaks it all down very nicely into sections. Other Maths-related books I got were from eBay. A guy listed 5-6 university-level books at 99p bidding with little interest from people. Each book is maybe worth £20+ and I got them for just over £20 altogether. Anyway, they’re all good, I just need to read them. Some are introductions to Analysis and Calculus, some are problem-solving ones for fun, and others are more in-depth textbooks. My main focus when bidding on the books was the Advanced Problems in Mathematics book by Steven Siklos which will guide you through STEP questions. I definitely recommend this one, regardless of taking STEP as you can use it in the summer before University for practice.

Hmm, not that I'm aware of (?)

What do you mean by not having a conditional offer?

Standard offer has been for the past few years:
A*A*A* or A*A*AA or A*A*A (with Grade 2 in STEP/64 in MAT/6.5 in TMUA)

When I received my offer, they gave me all 3 options, so any test isn't necessary, but can be taken. Contextual offers can be given of a grade reduction by 1 in the none-Maths subjects, but it's only given to some students

They changed their website the other week. They def need you to take TMUA or Step but doesnt mention MAT. If you are eligible for a contextual offer you are not required to take TMUA. Thats what i took away from it

Historically at least Warwick maths has had a very high offer rate (90% or more), because they have a lot of attrition from people who don't meet the offer requirements (usually STEP/TMUA scores). I wouldn't worry about getting an offer as such.

Thank you for that. I definitely agree with you, the part I was looking at was this year's requirements. Dodged a bullet there haha!
To be honest I'm 70% sure don't think they read the personal statement. They definitely have an emphasis on grades so make sure you have the required grades or better. Additionally, prepare for whatever entrance exam you want to take properly and you should have a really good chance of getting in. That being said don't neglect your personal statement.
