War and Its Effects on Individuals

"All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque

"Catch-22" by Joseph Heller

Themes: Both novels depict the horrors of war, but Remarque's focuses on World War I from a German soldier's perspective, while Heller's satirical approach addresses the absurdity of World War II.

Identity and Self-Discovery

"Beloved" by Toni Morrison

"Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison

Themes: Both novels deal with African American identity and the search for self amidst societal oppression. Morrison’s novel incorporates elements of magical realism, while Ellison’s is rooted in a more straightforward narrative style.

Gender Roles and Feminism

"The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood

"Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys

Themes: Both novels deal with themes of female oppression and resistance. Atwood's dystopian novel examines a future where women are subjugated, while Rhys’s prequel to "Jane Eyre" explores the colonial and gender-based oppression of its protagonist.
