The Student Room Group

Is my uni for me and should I do Law?

I am a year 13 student and I want to start uni this september (2024). I applied to 5 unis and was rejected from the 3 Russel Groups I applied to, so I am now planning on going to Sussex. Though I love my chosen uni, I'm afraid that I won't have huge experience/ career options because it is a lower ranked uni and not as prestigious. I am predicted AAA and I already achieved an A* in A-level and a B in an AS -level (since I took these exams in year 12, and they are different subjects than my current A-levels), but I only need AAB for Sussex and so I am also afraid that the work won't push me as much as I can (or maybe it is my pride speaking idk).
I definitely want to pursue a career in law, but if a law degree is worthless from a worse uni then I would rather do english lit in a more prestigious uni and attempt clearing. A gap year is not an option for me :frown:
What should I do?

Employers for your first job might take a person from a more famous university out of the slush pile of applications for an interview, but if the person doesn’t have the skills needed for the job, the “name” of their school is not going to get them the job. And after that, only achievement on the job is going to matter. After ten years absolutely no one cares where you got your undergraduate degree. They only care about what you have achieved.
As for graduate studies, only academic achievement counts.
So, the bottom line is what you do in school is infinitely more important than the name of the school from which you graduate. Always do your best work, determine to be at the top of your class, and you will succeed.

thank you so much, that's so comforting to hear!
If you liked Sussex I'd go there and focus on getting high degree classification and taking part in lots of extra curriculars.
If you want RG then look in clearing. Queens Belfast was in clearing last year at AAA.
No RG but well regarded for law Lancaster and Leicester were in clearing last year at AAB I think.
If you want to study law i'd study law. It's a great degree!
