Student Nurse Placements

Hi everyone
I have an unconditional offer to study a dual registration degree in Adult and Child Nursing at Robert Gordon University.

I have been accepted for the £10 000 grant- but what’s wondering what the costs for placements will be?

I’ve heard there isn’t much support when it comes to finding accommodation or travel expenses?

Hi Shan ☺️

Congratulations on your offer of nursing at Robert Gordon university in Aberdeen.

You'll be awards the NHS Scotland bursary of £10,000 a year provide through SAAS who you deal with regarding anything exciting you are entitled to over and above your bursary ok so I would definitely suggest you contact SAAS about this, your university fees are part by the Scottish government so don't worry about that...... One thing to remember is that YOU must REAPPLY for your BURSARY each year ( around begin of April as not automatically paid out to you for your next academic year ok )

Travelling expenses aren't paid for you journeys to and from university for your studying blocks there as pay this out of your own pockets I'm afraid to say.

INCLUDED in the NHS Scotland bursary which you are getting is TRAVELING EXPENSES for your PLACEMENTS ONLY a total of £5 for each day you are doing placements okay. Now if your travelling expenses are over the allocated £5 each day then YOU CAN reclaim any difference back from SAAS by filling out the necessary form and getting it signed by your placement and you send it back to SAAS along with copies of evidence - Bus tickets, train tickets etc as they will need these - so unfortunately you'll have to keep these safe so you can send it to SAAS. IF you are using your own personal car for placement then you have to provide them with receipt of full you bought plus your milage that YOU have used for travelling to and from your house to the placement and then they will calculate what they are own you over your £5 daily travelling expenses okay.

IF you are unable to get back to your normal living address when on placement due to the distance then you have to pay for accommodation locally yourself ( example - B&B or local hotel) but you are able to claim back xx £ amount over SAAS recommendation daily costs for accommodation by filling in the necessary form on SAAS website.

As I said above already I would definitely speak to SAAS about what other help you are entitled to as a nursing student.

I couldn't tell you what the accommodation expenses are because I stayed at home rather than any other accommodation in my own city when I was doing my nursing degree but I claim back my travel expenses for placement if they were over the allocated £5 daily travelling expenses.

A summer 2023 NHS Scotland qualified adult nurse.

Good luck with your dual courses....
