University of Southampton Accommodation.

I am having a dilemma over the location of my accommodation, one is further from the Highfield campus but closer to shops like Tesco and Sainsburys and the city centre but the other is closer to the Highfield campus but further from shops and such. Can I get some opinions on why I should go for one or the other?

Hey there!

It’s great to hear you’re thinking about different accommodation options. Are you specifically asking about the official halls of residence?

A great perk of any Halls of Residence at Southampton is the free UniLink bus pass, so wherever you live, you’ll be able to catch a free ride anywhere in the city. This is used by many of our halls of residence students. Most of our Halls sites are directly on these bus routes, such as Wessex Lane, Archers Road and Mayflower.

Popular purpose-built student accommodation in the Highfield area, such as Wessex Lane and Glen Eyre, are closer to the university and take less than ten minutes by bus. This would be useful if your course has lots of contact hours, where you need to attend the university in person often. You can check your course information and hours by choosing your course on this Southampton site: Undergraduate Degree Courses.

Be sure to also check which campus your course is taught on, as this may impact your decision. You may want to be situated closer to Avenue Campus or NOCS depending on your course.

If you'd like closer proximity to bars, clubs, and commercial shopping, Archers Road or Mayflower Halls are situated in great social areas, and are roughly 17-25 minutes away from campus by bus.

All of our accommodation options are relatively close to food shopping, supermarkets and takeaways, so you don’t need to worry too much - we’ve found at Southampton, students still have a great university experience regardless of their accommodation! It’s just personal preference on what you’ll need to prioritise during the year.
