How much does UCL care about GCSEs

I'm asking because I know Oxbridge does but since UCL is still a highly ranked university I want to know how much they do as well, for example for the Law LLB grade requirements they say you should have a grade 6 in English Language and Maths, if you don't meet that standard then would you be rejected regardless of your A Levels and extracurriculars?

hi!! I’m literally in year 10 so I can tell u nothing from personal experience but one of the teachers at my school worked for UCL’s admissions office and because they would get so many applicants , the first stage of elimination started with people who didn’t meet the gsce requirements. You might want to look on UCL’s website for your specific degree or contact the admissions office. Hope this helps!

girl we’re literally the same person i want to go to UCL and my maths papers have been going terrible (im also a moa too👀) good luck on paper 3! and hopefully results day doesn’t go too badly and in 3 years we end up in UCL!
Normally GCSE requirements are "hard" requirements, and those English language/maths GCSE requirements are across all degrees at UCL. If you don't meet them you would normally be automatically rejected.
If you don't meet those requirements I would suggest aiming to retake to meet those requirements. Note quite a few other unis also have similar minimum English/maths GCSE requirements so it's worthwhile to retake those two specifically.
This is not the same as shortlisting based on GCSE grades, which I'm not sure if UCL does otherwise. It's important to distinguish a requirement from such shortlisting methodologies.

I see, I think I will definitely resit maths to get a higher grade because at the moment it's looking like I won't get past a 4. This information was useful so thank you very much! Also would you happen to know if Kings would have similar requirements? I can't seem to find their GCSE requirements but I'm assuming as its Law and Kings being a Russell Group University it would be about the same regardless?

omg hi moa 🙈🙈 Yes these maths papers have been absolutely terrible and seeing that it's my worst subject ( literally can only get a 5 on foundation ) I have absolutely no hope for my actual results. Do you think you'll resit if you don't do as well in maths? Also good luck to you too and I hope you're able to achieve your goal!

It's pretty common for many unis to require a 5 in GCSE Maths at least. Also not uncommon for jobs to require it too, so worth aiming to get that (5 in GCSE Maths and English language are quite typical - some unis may ask for higher, jobs usually don't).

Thank you! I've done more research myself and if I don't achieve a 5 i'll be resitting for sure, thank you for your help

there will be competition especially for something like law so even of you get the entry requirements there will be people with higher grades competing

Yes that's true, I figured I'll probably resit maths in that case.

UCL definitely considers GCSEs, especially for subjects relevant to your degree. While they might not weigh them as heavily as Oxbridge, they're still important. If you don't meet the grade requirements, it could affect your application, but they also look at your A Levels and other aspects like extracurriculars. It's best to check their specific requirements and maybe even reach out to their admissions team for clarification.

Ahh i see thank you so much, I heard that some universities do not accept desits for GCSEs but I don't know if UCL is ne of them. The only subject that may cause an issue in my application is maths and perhaps science but I think for the subjects relevant to my degree, essay based subjects, I should be in the 7-9 range so it shouldn't cause too much of an issue?

UCL doesn’t accept resists for Medicine and I would assume that would be such with other competitive degrees. If u don’t meet the requirements I would assume so but idk

unless you're contextual and don't meet the gcse and a level grades, you'll likely get rejected. this is also true if you score low on the lnat. there's a lot of applicants that meet the grades or have higher grades which makes the process really competitive, they're unlikely to even look at your personal statement if you don't meet the requirements. this is true for most of the lnat unis.

and when it comes to resits, you should be able to resit gcse maths and apply to ucl laws without a problem. they dont mind gcse resits because they're not as of a significant part of the process as a levels, so you should be completely fine if you choose to resit. (but a friendly application tip, start lnat prep no later than easter of y12)

Np it’s only bc medicine is an extremely competitive course obviously. If you look at less competitive courses such as Geography for example the requirements are Cs in both maths and english
