Slt adviceee

Hi I was thinking about applying for SLT In September and was wondering if anyone has any personal statement tips and what work experience is good to have? Also I'm doing A level politics, A level law and Btec sport and was wondering if these subjects will be okay to apply with to university's like Manchester and MMU.

Hi,
I applied for SLT this year and received an offer from Greenwich. My best advice for your personal statement is to try to gain as much experience as you can during the summer holidays. For example, consider working with children at a school or adults in a care home. Additionally, you could email hospitals and clinics in your area to ask for shadowing experience with a speech and language therapist. This will give you an overview of their day-to-day life, which you can discuss in your personal statement.
I am currently working part-time as a teaching assistant for an art workshop where we help children with language and behavioral difficulties. You might want to look for volunteering opportunities related to that as well.
Also, I completed a free course with a speech and language therapy organization, which I will link below. The course provides a certificate upon completion and offers a brief overview of various diagnoses and treatments that a speech and language therapist uses. Some of this content will be covered at university.

I believe most universities offering SLT accept any A-levels/Btecs, with Newcastle being the only one that requires a science A-level. Regardless of the university, for all SLT courses, you will need to complete an interview before you get an offer, so don't forget to prepare for that as well.
Let me know if you need any additional help.

Hi there,
I’m doing SLT at Manchester Metropolitan and I’m loving it! I did psych, English lit, philosophy and ethics and an EPQ at A levels. But a huge range of students joined the course who had done many different a levels, or didn’t do a levels at all! It’s so brilliant how varied it is. I think experience is a huge factor in the interviews and also understanding your why you want to do this occupation!
Hope it all goes well,
Emily

From your experience did anyone get in through clearing or is the course so competitive it never does and what was the lowest grade you heard someone get in with?

Hi there
I’m a third year doing Speech and language therapy at Manchester metropolitan and LOVE IT!!
Manchester metropolitan was especially beneficial for me as it has so much placement and I learn well and so quickly when I’m in the environment. Maybe think about how you learn and what structure will help you do so the best!
everyone had totally different experiences coming into the course. i was a special needs teacher assistant - which I would recommend as it’s an amazingly rewarding job - and for the job to give me experience in working with the SEN children population.
Any experience that exposes you to those with mental health, learning difficulties, stroke, elderly adult or children with ANY communication or swallowing deficits is good experience for you to know what you might come across in the course.
I’m not too sure about personal statement It does this help with experience?
Best wishes
Couldn’t recommend this course more,
Emily

Hi there!

There is no Level 3 subject requirement for our BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy degree course. If your BTEC is a National Extended Certificate we will consider all three of your qualifications with predicted grades of AB for your A Levels and Distinction for your BTEC. If you are unsure if you're eligible, it's worth getting in touch with our Course Enquiries team: 0161 247 6969 or [email protected].

Direct SLT experience is not essential as it’s pretty impossible to find, but we do expect applicants to have done lots of research about the role of an SLT and have an understanding of client groups (of different ages and in different settings), to be knowledgeable about the work of a Speech and Language Therapist and the different communication difficulties. You can then evidence your understanding in your personal statement.

We suggest looking at blogs, You Tube, TV programmes about communication difficulties. This video was put together with COVID in mind but remains relevant so is worth a watch: https://vls.uclan.ac.uk/Play/58057.

Good luck with your application!

I hope this helps.
Mel 🙂

Our BSc SLT did go into Clearing last year but it didn't stay open throughout. This year there's no guarantee the course will go into Clearing at all and there's no guarantee entry requirements will go down for it. We won't know until Clearing opens.

If you already have your results, you could contact us from 5th July when Pre-Clearing opens to see if SLT is available and whether you're eligible to apply (Clearing Helpline: 0161 247 3000). If you have qualifications pending then you'll have to wait till you have your results before contacting us.

Hope this helps
Mel 🙂
