IB English Lit Extended Essay- can I analyse song lyrics?

For my IB Literature HL extended essay, I want to analyse short stories and song lyrics to explore gothic elements in both, and how this connects to a larger theme, but I am not sure if song lyrics are considered a work to analyse for English A Literature. Would I be allowed to use lyrics as one of my works?

I don't have an answer to your question but I am also an english lit ib student and I wanted to ask about your HL essay. If you've already started it of course, how did you go about choosing your topic and all that, we were supposed to start in early May and now my first draft is due Monday and I haven't written anything yet because I am struggling with my line of inquiry and finding evidence 😖
i am also assuming that ur taking the english lit HL but any advice about the subject in general would be appreciated cuz I am struggling and it is a very important grade for my uni applications because its a HL subject

Hi! I am taking English Lit HL as it is what I want to study in uni. However we haven’t started our HL essay yet so I don’t have any advice on that sorry. im kind of in the same boat as you but for the EE cause I have had to change my topic/ books like 4 times. What I would say though is to think about the topics discussed in the books you have read for English, and then maybe one of them will inspire you

You are allowed to use Lyrics but apprently the problem is, the lyrics need to have literary value or the highest grade you can score is a C. Which I’m unsure if anything can surpass that, because I’m English HL LL and wanted to do the same thing for extended essay but I’m not sure due to the odds and may have to restart..but I wanna know ANYONE who managed to get a B or an A for this type of situation, like what did you do right

Hi, I did the IB Middle Years Program, and we analysed all kinds of literature - including songs.

IB English Lit Extended Essay- can I analyse song lyrics?
